I do not have any children, but my mother forced me. And I am a better person for it.

I don't think you should force her to take swimming. Some people never like that sport, no matter how many lessons they have. I can still remember being made to take swimming lessons, hating the cold water, not fitting in with the other kids who loved jumping into a cold pool. Brrrrrrr.
I do think you are right to encourage her to do something with her spare time besides talk on the phone. Find several options and ideas and let her pick one or two. If she seems lazy and reluctant, you could tell her, "Fine... then you and I will do housework together. You are not going to just sit around here."
She may actually prefer that, and at least it's something! But I imagine she would choose something social instead of becoming an assistant housewife. LOL.

My mom forced me to do a lot and I think it was a good thing. I got to try a lot of things. Swimming was my favorate actually. The only thing was sometimes she had me doing to much and it was kind of stressful. Also some of the things I really didn't like but she made me do them anyway and I wish she hadn't. I would say that it is good to make her try a couple of things for a while and if she really hates it then try something else. It is great for a young girls self esteem to get involved in sport activities. Teens really need to have something else to focus on then the phone and clothes. Plus kids are generally happier when they are in shape.

take the phone, shopping, tv, etc. away from her...she'll get bored and want to do something. :-)
i don't think you can make your child do anything but maybe you can lay some choices out for her and tell her that she needs to choose one.
a lot of kids these days like karate and it could be a great self defense lesson for her...taking an instrument, joining clubs at school...dance, sports...ec.
i know it's tough being a parent...it's so hard because you want the best for them, ...i'm with ya! :-)

Yeah, the kid might not like it, but it is definitely good to do, as long as you don't go overboard. I suggest telling her something along the lines of pick an activity to do (like swimming, girl scouts, playing the violin, whatever) or you will pick one for her. I didn't like having to do things like that when I was a kid, but my parents pushed me to do it and now I am a better person for it.

Children should not be forced to engage in any sports, they have to want it. But instead of having her on the phone all day, give her some chores around the house. So when she's a grown up she won't strugle. Teach her to be self sufficient.

Try not to force it on her, but suggest it. Try to get her into other sports too, like softball or basketball. Open more doors for her, and hopefully she'll take advantage of the opportunities.

My daughter is 11 months so her activity is limited. :-)
I would definately enroll her in swimming, it is great that she came up it. Swimming is fun and water exercise always helps if you aren't use to a lot of physical activity...

sit down with her and talk to her about it. See if she will at least try it and then if she doesn't like it tell her she can quit.
I have a 4 yr old and 3 yr old and I know with my 4 yr old all ready if I force her to do something she doesn't like then she wont do it at all.
But if I ask her to try it she will. If she doesn't like it I don't make her keep with it as long as she tries it.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
If she is interested and is willing to do it, then yes, sign her up but if it is just something that she says in passing, don't waste her time or yours (and your money) by pushing her to do it. That will only cause hate and discontent.
