Wouldnt it be possible to reduce US forces in Iraq if someone were to persuade other nations that they also have vested interests in keeping the peace there until Iraqi forces are up to the job?

Canada has increased our strength in Afghanistan to free up American troops for Iraq. For those of you who think that the UN should step in and clean up your mess: the UN would not support the USA declaring war on Iraq, why should they "take over" now. The US government has alienated several of their allied countries over the past few years.

We've tried to get other nations to help join the fight. Remember that didn't go over too well... Look at France.

Secretary Harvey (sec of the army) mentioned that he would like to reduce troop levels. We're sitting at somewhere around 14-15 brigades out in Iraq right now and he would like to see that down to 6-7 within a year or so. Will this happen? Who knows.

We're out there just sustaining the country and keeping them from falling apart until their new government can get a firm hold of things and their police force can get it together. Once they can prove they can do that then we will pull out... But nobody can determine that in advance.

There's signs of what is to come if you follow the news. Recently (I think today or yesterday) the Iraqi army faced off with a group of militants. The end result was that the Iraqi forces lost 25, the militants lost 5 and there were 10 civilians killed. Who won this one? Exactly my point. This is a good test to determine whether they're ready or not. It's looking like they're not. And as far as increased insurgency activity, we can't pull out.

Now, if the UN would step in and do their job instead of us having to do it, then MAYBE we could pull out. We won't see this happen.

Yes I agree.I brought out in another question that we should persuade the United Nations to deploy peace keeping troops and we could withdraw ours.I agree with your question.

there is no reduction in troops unless USA cant tolerate the lost in men at Iraq and in this case Democracy works and Congrees call to return the troops other wise these troops stay for ever here

What other nations would we approach?? I'm just curious if you had any particular ones in mind.

We all have opinions on how things should be done and obviously we're not all "deciders". Our opinions matter, speak up man!!

we asked the UN for help in training the Iraqi's. The French would only do it if we sent the Iraqi's to them. The UN is worthless.

Sure, but few other countries are irrational enough to ignore plain facts and make such a costly counter-productive commitment.
