Feed her puppy chow. That will put the weight on her in about 30 days!

First of all, its SOOO nice to know that there is another responsible, caring dog owner out there! THANK YOU! I have a black lab, 3 yrs old -- he's my assistance dog (I am disabled). DEFINITELY get her to a vet & take along a stool sample to check for worms. My guess is worms, but discuss her diet with the vet, too. It's not good to change a dogs diet all the time. Their digestive systems are easily upset. Just my opinion but I don't think puppy chow contains the proper nutrients for a 5 yr. old. I am assuming she's active, so you would want her "trim". Ask the vet -- maybe she's not as skinny as you think. It's always better than a fat dog. That can really effect their health & mobility later on. Hope this helps. I'd like to hear the outcome.

First off take her to the vet and get her dewormed and feed her a good quality dog food (don't feed supermarket foods, they are filled with nothing but junk and artificial perservatives not fit for any living thing to eat). Go to your local petshop and pick up the finest food you can afford to give her (remember the premium brands my appear to be more a lot more expensive, but they really aren't that much more - you will find your dog will eat at least 1/2 the amount it was eating of the junky supermarket food)
Some of the good brands are:
Innova EVO - High protein, low carb food which contains no grains at all.
Solid Gold
California natural
Canidae
Timberwolf
Wellness
Fromm
Natural Balance
I was once told by a breeder friend of mine, when I was trying to put weight on my female Shih-tzu, to add some cooked pasta to her kibble. it really worked for her.

Ingredients
10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.
Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.
Thaw as needed and feed raw!
Uses
"I take a frozen pack to dogs' shows with me, kept on ice, and never have had any trouble with it spoiling, even in the heat of Texas summers..."
"All my dogs go crazy over this stuff...but you have to be careful, it will put weight on the dogs pretty fast if you feed enough....I feed a pack a day...half in am , half in pm."
"When I want to increase the weight on a dog, I feed more; so far I haven't got to the point where they won't eat anymore, and believe me, Satin has eaten a lot at one setting. It will put on the weight, make the coats soft and blue black (on black dogs at least, that's all I have)."
"The dogs stop all the itching and chewing at their coats/skin, their eyes get this bright look and the energy level goes out the roof (not that Belgians need any more energy)."
"The ***** that I got this recipe for is a picky eater, but when she in on the food (I long ago stopped trying to "bury" it the other food; they just hunt it down to eat first, and making a mess trying) she eats much better. It seems to whet her appetite."

Sounds to me like she may have worms. Even if a dog doesn't eat that much, they should still have a fit body, not skinny and bony. I would take her to the vet and while you are there get her started on heartworm tablets. Like heartguard or triheart. They are very inexpensive and 6 come in a box. They take one a month. Take Care and Good Luck!

I think the most important thing you need to do is take her to the vet and get her checked out to ensure there is no underlying medical problem causing her to be underweight. Your vet is going to be able to offer the most insight as to whether your dog is a healthy weight or not.
I wouldn't mess around with foods until you are sure your dog is healthy.
Cheers.

Best advice I can offer is:
1. Take the dog to the vet for a checkup.
2. Feed it the best dry food you can get.

Gradually increase the amount that you are feeding her. Also, take her and a poop sample to the vet to rule out intestinal parasites.
In the meantime, increase what you're feeding her by a 1/2 cup per day.

I wonder if you have wormed her?
My pup is very fussy about what she eats, loves the meat dishes I cook, hates commercial made dog food, only eats a little of the hard biscuits.
I wonder at 5 if she is missing her previous family? Dogs need a lot of lovin.
