I have a queststion:
How or where can you find out if a book or a movie is still copyrighted?

I don't know anywhere but the actual patents registry or the intellectual property register of each country. Still, if the author's been dead for more than 75 years [85 in the USA and Canada] the piece becomes public domain.

The piece, means, the composition. If you wanna use for example, a Mozart symphony, the piece is public domain, but the recording is probably copyrighted.

In the US, it is not based on the author's death, though that is true in Mexico.

In the US, it is 75 years after the book was published even if the author is still alive. At one time it was a shorter time, but Mickey Mouse was expiring, and Disney went to the Federal legislature and begged them to exend it just for them. They did. I am betting in a few years when Mickey Mouse is ready to expire again, they will be extending it again...

The Gutenberg Project is a project of volunteers who take old books whose copyrights have expired and convert them to text and makes them available for free download. The problem is they are different than today's books.
