I have an old Sony TV. With the cable plugged into the VHF input the channels only go up to 37 (it's supposed to go to 72). Every channel abover 37 is dead black. The only other inputs are two UHF jacks.

Your best solution is a sledge hammer. You see, you have to aim to the center of the screen, but wait it is a precise move and may require some supervision. Goggles are recommended.

Use the VCR as your tuner. Most VCRs are cable or satellite ready. Set the TV on the channel that receives the VCR signal (channel 3 or 4) and never change it again.

Feed the VHF, satellite, or cable signal into the VCR and use it as your tuner. It would be best to directly wire the TV and VCR with RCA cables. If the old Sony has RCA jacks, and it probably does. Otherwise you are converting the incoming signal to a digital signal, then converting it into a TV signal, then sending it to the TV and converting it into another digital signal.

I have a DVD player, two VCRs and two incoming satellite feeds to my TiVo. I run all of it through an Amplifier, which gives me 5.1 surround sound, and then feed it to the TV. I use all RCA Jacks to keep the signal pure and I can switch between each device with my Amplifier Remote. I am looking into getting a universal remote and programming every device into it. This is the best way to handle it.

The point is I never change the TV channel and use it only as a monitor. Before I had the TiVo, the DVD player, and the Satellite, I was only receiving airborne signals. I put up an antenna and fed it all to my VCRs and I still used the TV as just a monitor. That's how a cable or satellite servcie works, the box becomes your tuner.

If you only have an airborne signal then you are out of luck. Most TVS now days receive a satellite or cable signal, very few receive an airborne signal and turners for the airborne signal are not available separately. You could try to get your TV serviced and get the tuner replaced, but it probably isn't worth it. I suggest you go to Pricegrabber.com or eBay.com and find a cheap TV or VCR there.

that is normal, the TV is working properly. It is too old to be able to recognise the newer (relatively) frequencies of the cable channels. You can either use a VCR as a tuner, set your TV to CH 3, then use the VCR to select channels, or get a cable box from the cable service provider.

You may need some kind of adaptor. But I would guess the cable company needs to supply a box, or the TV is starting to go.

I JUST got rid of a 20 year old TV yesterday! I'm surprised it worked so long.

Good luck. I'd go for a new one. Good ones are still cheap.

What's the question about your old tv?

My suggestion is to wait for a good sale & get yourself an updated TV.

Go to second hand or repair shops or even pawn shops. There are loads of newer TV's there for very little cost.'

Blame the darn cable company. They've blocked out your channels without their box.
