Unlike beef cattle, horses can live a long and productive life as farm animals, and even if slaughtered at advanced age apparently produce very good meat. In the scheme of things, beef cattle do little but eat during their lives, and are slaughtered relatively young. Does this make any sense?

Your Mom's Mom: I beg to differ, horse meat actually tastes better than most beef you'll find in a supermarket! Even you would probably think so if you were not aware ir was horsemeat!

it has to do with cultural sensibilities than usefulness of animal. insects are edible, abundant, easy to raise, nutritious and are often considered as pests. and yet how many people do you know that eat them, on purpose?

Its just something we are used too I guess. But besides meat, a beef cow and relativly no purpose. The meat that comes from them is good and used for many things and while as the hide. Horses on the other hand can be used to pull, ride, and as silly as it sounds become very good companions. Most people would never think of a cow like that.

It is relative to where you are at. In France they eat horse meat, in some other country they eat monkey meat, dog gets on the menu some where else, while whale is preferred on still a different menu.

Too, if the populations not going to put it in their mouth, the argument doesn't matter!

Are you ready for some Baboon Brains, there are places where they are a delicacy. Even as cows are revered as GODS.

Cows are cheaper and serve little. Horses could cost lots of money and serve well. Besides, horse meat is tough because of all the exercise the horse does. Maybe if we give beer to the horse and some massages.........hmm. I don't know, I'll eat any kind of meat.

Your from Europe.
And I have supported a ban on slaughtering horses in the US. Horses have never been considered part of the food chain in America.

And it's not all aged horses. Young, perfectly healthy horses are being slaughtered every day and shipped to Europe.

You eat your way and I'll eat my way.

Horses have been the life blood of man for centuries. Why in hell do you feel it necessary to criticize our way of eating and what we eat?
Save your venom for the politicians.

I've done a lot of back packing and I have met people from many nationalities and the Belgians eat horses and think nothing of it.
I have eaten Zebra and that tasted like wild meat.
Hey I reckon we shouldn't knock it till we have tried it.

Cows produce more milk, which would have been an important everyday food, with meat being an occasional treat.

I think its because people have a hard time eating animals that they have affection for, or can be used as pets. Think about it. All the animals that we eat, people really could care less about, and they arn't trying to have them as pets-------pigs,cows,chickens,fish. Fish can be pets, but how attached is anyone going to be to something that doesn't make noise or can't even be held. As for pigs, cows, chickens, and turkeys----I guess they just arn't all that loved.

considering our main source of transportation for a long time was horses, be kind of foolish to eat your only reliable means of transportation right? horses were more functional rather than delectable. cows just got the short end of the stick for being slow and easy to kill......

beef is a better source of protein. Partly because of the digestive system. Four stomaches do a better job of converting roughage.
