Why do my cats scrap the floor in front of their food?

cats, like humans like to eat where its clean, so they clean their area around their food when they eat. my cat has been doing this for a long time, the vet says he just likes to be tidy!

It's a safety issue, the act of burying food covers their scent which is essential for their survival and also keeps their food supply safe from other animals.

Tell me about it... my cat "buries" her water!, I never heard of a cat doing this except for food. But my cat is rescued my vet thinks she didn't have enough water or had to fight for water so she buries it to keep it safe. The behavior decreases when the cat feels more comfortable and safe , at least that's what I was told.

1.it is trying to mark its teritory.cats in the wild,as nasty as it sounds cats will pee on there food if they dont want a nother cat to eat it .the cat will try it and think its the nastyest thing!but he *the cat that got the food*will think it is the most apatising thing in the world.****~EW~****

It's a scent thing. My male did this at our old apartment when the dished were on a linoleum floor, but I haven't seen him do it since we moved here and his dishes are on carpet. I also noticed he never did it when he had kibble, just soft food.

cats are strange. mine scratches his food out of the bowl onto the floor before he eats it. that's what makes them unique.
