I have the ParaGard (copper) IUD. It's non-hormonal, so it won't f*ck with your body and make you crazy like the bc pill or patch or the Mirena IUD sometimes will. Your ob/gyn "installs" it (lol) at a regular visit. My doctor told me to come in during my period because my cervix was already open then, so for me it was painless. It took about 3 or 4 minutes TOPS, and that was it. No muss, no fuss. All you have to remember to do is check once a month to make sure your "string" is there. If it's not, it means the IUD has either fallen out or worked its way farther up into your uterus.
With the ParaGard, you do still ovulate, so pregnancy (and conception) are still possible, but it has higher than a 99% success rate at preventing pregnancy. If you do happen to become pregnant and have the IUD taken out asap, you can still carry a baby to term and have no problems.
It works by making the sperm stay away from the egg, for lack of a better term. :) The sperm are detracted by the copper, so they never even reach the egg to fertilize it. So it's not like you're aborting an embryo every month or anything.
For my first few cycles after having it put in, I bled slightly heavier and my periods lasted a day or two longer, but that was only for two months. Things are back to normal now. It's been 13 months and no babies. :)
For more info., go to http://www.paragard.com or ask your ob/gyn.
Edit: I forgot! It's good for 10 years, and if and when you decide you're ready for kids, your ob removes it as quickly as he put it in, and there's no "waiting period" for your body to become fertile again, as there usually is with hormonal birth control.

Personally, I like the Nuvaring. You don't have to worry about it for 3 weeks like the pill -which is everyday. Plus if you forget, ask the doctor for the little timer they give you. You might ask your doctor about Nuvaring or the IUD..
But ask your doctor, some birth control may not work for you. Like the patch doesn't work when a girl weighs over 198lbs and the pill has more risks when a girl smokes cigarettes. So you might check... Your gyno should have a few pamphlets to look at.

well it depends on if you have had a child, if you already have a kid I would say IUD, they are great. and if not I don't know what to tell you. i was on the pill and I got Pregnant but I had an Abortion, and then i was using a Diaphragm and I got pregnant with my son. my sister was on the Shot and I have a niece, and then my best friend was using the Patch and BAM she has an 4 month old!! my of my other friends have been using the IUD copper one for 4 years and still no kids, so good luck with that.

Go get the shot from the doctor once a month. At least then you remember to make the appointment.

I agree with Char ; Get your gynelogist approval for the right bc for you. Some bc's will make you ill, so talk it over with your dr. Until you find the right on lay off sex it you are preventing a baby. & the partner can also use condoms too until you find the right one.

The best thing would be to consider an implant so that you only have to worry about it once every three months.

If your doctor approves, I would think the Depo shots. I had no problems what so ever with them.
