I know they are not really my friends, but some of them are nice to me when I'm alone with them, but mean in a group.
We started school this week and when we were introducing ourselves in class, I said my name (it is "Jewish sounding", meaning it involves a "berg", "silver," or "gold" but I am actually adopted and my parents didn't raise me in the Jewish religion). A lot of the girls in my class snickered and later in the hall they would say my last name & laugh as they go by.
Then, today in gym class when I went back to my gym locker I found all of my "feminine supplies" that were in my backpack strewn all over the locker room and a note that said my last name on it in big letters.
These girls also pull my hair in class and say I have a big Jewish nose (kind of ridiculous because I am not even Jewish!)
There is one girl in particular that is inciting all of this; when she's absent the others are OK. This girl is related to the principal (niece) . What should I do?

also should I change my last name (it is hyphenated so I could just drop one name) so people don't think I am Jewish all the time? Is that why they say I have a big nose (because of my name?)

This is classic bullying, I know it's hard to accept when you are in the middle of it, but try and step back and put it into perspective, and know, revenge is the best remedy.
Write down all the physical and personal faults of these girls and find amusing names and comments to make about them, the crueler the better. Make sure you are confident and calm when you make your attack also make sure that lots of other people hear you, the more support you have the more damaging your words will be.
Why not post the flaws of these girls here, that way people can come up with unpleasant things to say to them.
Finally, if you think you may be in any physical danger from these people, ignore all I have said before and seek advice from an adult.

Don't follow the example of the girls by getting revenge or being rude; instead set an excellent example. Be yourself and be proud of your name. Changing your name would be admitting that there is something wrong with being a Jew or having a Jewish-sounding name.
As for the harassment, you don't have to endure that in silence. Speak to your coach about the gym locker incident and go to the principal if necessary. Even if the main troublemaker is his or her niece, the principal is still obligated to protect students from harassment.
Talk to a teacher or the principal about perhaps having a program about respect for diversity for the whole school. Sounds like some of these kids could use it.

First, get new friends. These kids suck. Second, it is against the law to harrass someone for their religion (even if they've got it wrong.) It is illegal. Document what's going on (write down the date and what happened) and go to a teacher you trust. Get your parents involved if you think they would be supportive. They may want to get a lawyer to represent you. Remember, you have a RIGHT to attend school without being harrassed. These jerks are violating your civil rights. You deserve better, and I don't even know you. I'm serious, this is a really big deal and you have the right to make it stop!!!
Don't change your name because of these idiots.

mar c,
Talk about it with your parents. The principle may be extremely receptive to this news.
Whatever you do, don't let them know it bothers you. You have a chance to show them what you are made of. The law of averages says to me that there are some that have not come forward yet to tell you that they hate what they are doing to you. You have to be strong, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't tell the adults.

During one of the times when they're nice to you when you're alone with them, look at them directly and tell them to their face that they're hypocrites, not your friends and not to come around you again. Or maybe tell the whole group. I would't put up with that crap for a second.

Ignore them. Then theyll get bored and tired and will forget about it. Its pretty sad how mean kids can be these days.
And even if you were Jewish- its nothing bad. I think its a very beautiful religion.

Next time they incite you, look at them dead in the eye, and perform a Nazi salute.
