I just got back to school, and my mom has been a terrible pain! She's so picking and grabbing! She thinks she HAS to see my homework and check my Agenda and know everything about my life. No space at all! But that's not the problem. I forgot to bring my homework home! I made her so upset! I feel so guilty! What to do???

Go ahead and ask her for you space, but give her room to be a parent.

It's part of her job to see to it your homework is done and that she does what she can to allow you to succeed in school. So much of today's debate about how the school systems are failing focuses on the teachers, the state and about funding. These arguments are valid, but totally disregard the fact that too many parents are sloughing off their responsibilities off, away from themselves.

I have actually heard parents, in a PTA meeting, say that the schools should be responisble to teach children responsibility, citizenship and honor. When confronted with the question of why should the schoold do it, many of the parents said that they did not have the time to do this.

Your mother wants to make the time. Good for her!

Ask her for your space. You need that to be able to grow into your adult self during that time. In the meantime, you need a few life lessons to apply during "your" time, to make sure you succeed and thrive in adulthood.

I suggest you make a deal with her where time is set aside for her to do exactly what she asks. None of that is unreasonable. Parents who DON"T do that are labled as irresponsible. Agree on a schedule for that time, perhaps a half hour, on a daily basis. Your agenda MUST be included in these discussions. Again, that's her JOB.

You need privacy, keep a diary, preferably locked. She should respect that. If you have your doubts, keep it as school.

Good luck with that.

Bring your homework from now on. Good for your mom. If you do right you won't have to worry what she looks at. The ball is in your court not her. Grow up and do what is expected of you. You think life is tuff now, wait till you have a boss breathing down your neck. You have to do right or you don't pay your bills anymore. Or you will have a spouse counting on you doing right. So start practicing right now. m

Since you know what your mom is like, make a special note each day to bring your homework home and do it before you do anything fun. She is just trying to prepare you for the "real" world. You should be glad to have a mom who cares about you and how you turn out.

It's obvious you mom cares about your education. Tell her you have to be responsible for your actions, like forgetting your homework. Then tell her you will try harder. She will learn to trust you and back off.
