Hi, I have been doing research on Plasma n LCD Tvs for more than a year. And for the whole year, I'm have been reading "What Video", a HDTV magazine with over 25 years of tv reviewing hstory, it has their own lab with unique equipments to test the TRUE specification of almost every models of HDTV that are on sale. Seriously I have seen the growth in technology of both plasma n LCDs as well as plenty of professional reviews on many HDTVs. Therefore I wish to remind u that never trust what a saleman recommend as they usually recommends those Tvs with high comission for them to u. And don't just look on the specification of the HDTV, many brands boast their specification just to attrach consumers. From "What Video" u can see a Samsung 10,000:1 contrast ratio plasma TV loses out to a Panasonic Veria plasma TV(3000:1) when they test their specification. Serously speaking, look for the brand name than the specification.
From the whole year of reviews I have read, Panasonic and Pioneer have been fighting for the crown of the plasma war since last year June. Their plasma are so good that they easily win other brands of plasma tv and even LCDs. Pioneer plasma sharpness are always impressive, even Panasonic plasma can't be more superior to them when comparing sharpness. However, Panasonic plasmas always have UNBEATABLE black levels[grey scaling] and they did VERY well on motion handling. Panasonic PV500 and PX600 even has a built-in MP4 recorder, u can save money on a dvd-recorder for a Blu-Ray/HD DVD from that. =) Basically it's up to individual to decide who's actually better. I'm not saying other brands are no good, but these 2 are definitely the only brands that produce high-end plasmas.
If u could wait a little longer, it would be better. Since last month, plasma/lcd tvs of resolution of 1920x1080 has been coming into the market. Top plasmas brands Panasonic and Pioneer are having their 1080p HDTV coming in very soon[maybe a week or the most 2].

My recommendation? Go look at the very best out there so you know exactly what they are capable of.
Next, look at the price tag. Did you get sticker shock? If no, buy the best, you will never regret it and all your friends will wonder why their Costco 50" plasmas look like garbage compared to yours. If the answer was yes, you did get sticker shock, start moving downwards in price, performance and possibly size until you find the level(s) that you are comfortable with.
Now, which is arguably the hands down best plasma? That would be the Pioneer Elite. They make a 43" & a 50" plasma and another 50" that displays 1080p.
