I have a 7 year old labrador retriever. Im 18 weeks pregnant and ever since the beginning of my pregnancy my dog has been acting strange. She constantly wont leave my side and wakes me up every few hours in the night for no reason. Its becoming quite annoying. What should I do?

The dog knows...she is protecting you....its ok, though it is annoying, it is ok....that is a good sign that your dog wil be good with the baby

Your dog is trying to be a good member of the pack by watching over you. It would be a good idea to get the dog prepared for the baby...your vet may be able to point you to some good resources for going about this. By preparing the dog, there will be less chance of behavioral issues once the baby comes, and starts moving around. There are articles, and I'm sure books about preparing a dog for baby...I'm just not sure where to find them. There was one in Whole Dog Journal several months ago...but that's the only one I've read.

Here's an interesting story to remember: There was a man who worked with wild wolves. I think he rehabilitated them or something. He had a couple that he'd had for years and years. They were essentially wild, but he had them in yards for some good reason. I think he was working with an extinction programme.

One day he injured his back and couldn't walk upright. He was stooped over and hobbling, but still walking. He went into the male wolf's yard to feed it the same as he had for the last five years. And the dog killed him instantly.

It was because he was moving differently. The dog's instincts told him that a member of his pack was sick, and therefore was a threat to the pack, so he killed the man. True story.

Your dog's looking out for you. But you may not understand all of the reasons why. Good luck.

She is watching over you! She can tell the changes in you!
Your dog must love you very much! You are very fortunate. When the baby is born, you will have the best babysitter in the world. Your dog will probably station herself right under the crib. Don't worry - she won't hurt the baby - but if something is wrong or seems strange to her, your dog will come and get you.

She knows, Some breeds know when there is change coming. Maybe you are not paying as much attention to the dog. Make sure you let her know, I know it sounds crazy but this dog is protecting you and making sure you are OK. I bet it is annoying but make some time special for you and the dog each day. She should calm down, Your Vet can also give you some tips.

SHe knows you're pregnant. SHe is trying to help, and make sure things are ok. OR she senses a change in you, and is now needy. spend some extra time with her, give her a little more attention, as she may feel nervous over your new smell and behavior. remember, their noses are great, they can smell the hormones released by you.

It's a sign of love. You should be flattered. Then close the door when your sleeping, so the dog won't bother you. LOL

She knows and she's taking "care" on her own way of you, you must let her adjust to this matter. Believe me the more I know man the more I feel fond of my dog.
