I went to the doctor today, because my suspected that I had an ear infection. When we got their the doctor told me to lay down on the exam table and I did. He went in the other room, and came back a few minutes later with a silver tray. All of the sudden, he reached under my skirt, pulled on my thong and jabbed a thermometer up my butt. Wasn't this a bit inappropriate for a doctor to do?

In this day and age, unless it is the physician's preferred method for obtaining a body temperature or necessitated as per medical reasons, I would tend to think, particularly with a 14 year old girl and a male physician, it would at best, be questionable. But then too, what mother let's her 14 year old wear a thong, much less enter into an examination where her mother would not be present? As far as the requirement to take a rectal temperature, a few things:
1. If this is the doctor you usually go to, you would know (in this case) HIS protocol.
2. If his protocol was to measure your temperature rectally, there should be a female (his nurse or medical assistant present, along with your guardian)
3. If required, a rectal temperature on a young teen female should probably be done by a female caregiver. And if the doctor is a male without females (nurses, medical assistants), you should have had a female with you in the exam room, albeit perhaps embarrassing to have a thermometer up your rectum.

In your message you saw "we" arrived there. Who else was with you?

WOW. Any other time you mention thong and a 14 year old. People would be saying what type of mother lets her kid wear those things. But, throw in a rectal thermometer and a male doctor and that is all anyone see. Thank heavens he was not examining your breast, or he was a gynecologist. Boy what people would be thinking. Your mother dragging you to his office and paying him good money to look up your honey pot. He could have explained why and warned you but I am sure his course of action was totally professional. You said you had an ear infection. I am no doctor but the logic to me is if you had an infection you might have run a fever. And as one person said, use an ear thermometer....when you have an ear infection?. If you have a fever taking it under the tongue might give a higher read. Would you be just as pissed if a female doc buggered you with a thermometer? Or maybe we should have male doctors treat only male patients and female doctors treat only female patents. And since lesbian doctors might get a rush examining female patients restrict them to men only. Then we won't waste time talking about stuff like this.

Hello,

You wrote a Question BEFORE you got that exam, asking if it was ok for your doctor to examine you that way (because your friend warned you about that doctor)--and EVERYONE TOLD YOU that was NOT ACCEPTABLE--and to tell your Parents not to send you to that Doctor...It seems that you went ahead to that exam anyway.

Yes it is WRONG and what the Doctor did may be sexual assault.

Do you have a close relationship with your Parents? Even if you are not close to them, your parents will protect you if anyone tries to harm you. Tell them what he did, and tell them that you WILL NOT go back to that Doctor because you feel violated.

Your body belongs to you--and you should NOT let any one touch you in any way that males you feel uncomfortable. That is your right as a woman.

That Doctor should be reported. Call 411 to get the phone number to the Department of Health, and ask them how you can report this Doctor for what you feel is sexual assault..It may not change what happened, but it will PREVENT other teens from being assaulted in the future.

Peace---I hope you listen this time.

1. Male doctors are required to have a female nurse present during the examination and treatment of a female.
2. Rectal temps are only taken on infants because they can not keep a thermometer in their mouth.
3. Get a lawyer.

Yes, He should have told you what he was going to do. Most doctors ask you to undress if they have to do anything that causes you to have to take your clothes off. You are not a baby. I would tell your mother. I know there are the ear thermometers that most people use. If for some reason a thermometer cannot be used by mouth, they do have rectal thermometers. I would report him.

If this isn't a BS question then YES this was inappropriate.

Adults and adolescents can easily have their temperature taken orally.

Also, most doctors in the US will have a female nurse in the room with a female patient. As protection for themselves, they keep a "witness" in the room so a disrobed female patient is never alone with a doctor.

IF the doctor had a medical reason for taking a rectal temperature, he would have asked you to disrobe and wear a paper gown, and he would have told you what he was doing and why.

very inappropriate. he could have taken an oral temp just like other doctors. usually the nurses do all this for him already before he even gets to see you, so theres no need for him to do it. he cant just do that free willingly unless you let him. but to reach down there and do that, what kind of doctor is he? you need to report this kindda stuff so it dont happen to you or anyone else. plus you really need to tell your parents so they can do something about it too. the next time you go have your parents be there with you and a female nurse.

Where were your parents? Yes, I think it inappropriate that your doctor took your temp with a rectal thermometer. What do your parents think?

i work at a doctors office and i only do rectal temperatures on babies that are 12 months and younger. anyone older than 12 months old should get a tympanic (ear) temperature, or oral temperature. rectal temperatures on a 14 year old is definately inapproppriate. i would definately tell your parents and have them ask the doctor why he/she did a rectal temperature.

Why are you still going to a pediatrician at your age?

If you are serious about this you need to tell your parents. There should have been a female nurse in the room as well.
