I would suggest a 1/2 day trip tp Piza. The trains leave about every half hour till about 10 p.m. If you want to climb the tower....it's open now but you have to have a reservation (you can do this online for a slight fee). Some say its only a short walk to the tower from the train station but i would suggest taking a bus (#1 if I remember correctly). It drops you off at the back of the baptistry/church/tower complex. My family and I set up our climb for 7 p.m. (We left Florence at 3....about an hour travel....20 minute bus ride....a little souvenir shopping....The climb to the top of the tower...bus ride back....dinner at the train station and catch the train back at 9 pm and back in Florence at 10 p.m.) The train fare was very reasonable (there are different types of trains...try to avoid the local trains...they make many more stops than the direct trains.)
We really enjoyed ourselves and the short trip and climb was one of the most memorable experiences of our vacation.

I just got back from a 5 week trip to Europe, of which I spent about 3 days in Florence. The best use of your time would be a day trip to Pisa. It's only about 45 minutes by train from Florence. While some other small towns may be just as close, Pisa is definitely one that does not require more than a day. Go and see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tourists are allowed to walk up in it again.
Do not try to go to Rome or even Venice for a day trip as some others have suggested. Both of those cities are worth far more time than simply a day.

Visit one of any number of the hill top towns of Tuscany: Siena or Montepulciano are just two. Each town has a specific "market day" which was great fun. Many of the towns have their own websites so you might do a Yahoo search for specific places.

take a tour of some of the Tuscun Wineries.. or check out Siena. A town built as fortress on top of hill.

travel through some small towns. deruta is awesome with their ceramics and perugia is beautiful. there is so much to see and explore in that region.
