Depending on where you live some dogs just need the extra warmth in the winter. Especially if there not breed for cold weather. I have a Boxer and we put a coat on him when we go for walks in the winter. I also live in Alaska so it get a bit chilly here.
But if you live say in Florida it is pretty silly to dress your dog up considering it is to hot,and its doing nothing but torturing the poor thing in the heat.
Unless it is Halloween or a special occasion I could see someone dressing their dog up then. Other than these reasons I think that it is just torture for the poor animal.

To "humanize" them. People try to "humanize" everything. Many people think of their pets as their kids, and kids where clothes. Also some breeds of animals suffer from always being cold or "nervous" and they shake a lot. So people put shirts on them to keep them warm. In the winter time when owners take their dogs on walks they will throw a dog sweater on the dog just to give them added warmth.
I will admit...I am guilty of putting sweaters on my dog, but ONLY in the winter time because he is a "nervous" and cold breed. Plus..it is kinda cute....

Some people do it for laughs, some because they think they're dogs are kids....others because some breeds of dogs such as Italian greyhounds, whippets, Chihuahuas, and tiny dogs under 10 pounds actually do get very cold in the winter and will become ill if exposed to cold temps for prolonged periods of time...We have bred these dogs and made them unusually small or hairless, so isn't it up to us to keep them alive and warm??

People clothe their dogs for many reasons. My tiny year old dog has trouble keeping warm in the winter. She has a harness coat and shirt to protect her from the outside cold. She also has special "footie" pajamas for cold nights, because a dogs body heat transpires through the padding on the paws. Please don't hate those of us who dress our furbabies. Instead of hate, educate.

My friend's mom used to put a shirt on her dog because it had a weird skin condition....but most people just do it because they think it's cute.

I don't like seeing dogs dressed up in clothes although our dog Kevin the Collie loves his bandana!! However if your dog has a rash or flea bites, a T shirt will stop him scratching while he is in the house. But I think it is cruel to take them out in clothes. They need to remember they are dogs ....

I dress my Maltese up because it's so cute! She has several dresses and a winter coat--we live in Minnesota. Also, to keep her from getting sunburned in the summer. But mostly, just because it's cute! She's such a doll. It's fun, so why not. Who's it hurting if the dog doesn't mind?
