It's a myth:
"The age old myth that cheese gives you nightmares has finally been laid to rest this week following the release of a new study carried out by the British Cheese Board.
The in-depth Cheese & Dreams study, a first of its kind, reveals that eating cheese before bed will not only aid a good night’s sleep but different cheeses will in fact cause different types of dreams. "
However:
"What is particularly interesting is the reported effect different types of British cheese have on influencing the content of dreams. It seems that selecting the type of cheese you eat before bedtime may help determine the very nature of often colourful and vivid cheese induced dreams”
You might also want to avoid Stilton if you are female:
"females who ate Stilton had some of the most bizarre dreams of the whole study – although none were described as bad experiences. Highlights included ... a vegetarian crocodile upset because it could not eat children"

I don't know about nightmares but I can pretty much be assured that on the night I eat pizza for supper I dream. I haven't noticed whether or not I dream when I eat stilton or bleu or some other strong cheese, it just happens with pizza.

Cheese has a vitamin called B6. and I've noticed also when I have cheese at night my dreams (nightmares) are more real then ever. I try to not eat cheese at night for this reason. So to answer your question. Yes cheese, cause of the B6 causes nightmares.

Last time I was nightshift I ate cheese and toast at 5 in the morning. Never again!!!! Woke up having a fight with an imaginary assailant weilding a knife! Normally when nightshift a herd of elephants could parade through and I wouldn't wake up. I'll stick to toast and jam for nightshift munchies from now on!

I don't know if there is any scientific backing for it, but I totally think cheese gives you nightmares. I had a cheese sandwich one night recently, and woke up in a panic.

If thats true, mice are suffering post traumatic stress from night terrors.
This myth arose from aristocrats back in the 1800s holding port and cheese parties, while smoking opium. They blamed the resulting passing out and tripping, or hallucinating on the cheese!

Definitely. I sleep badly at the best of times but if I have cheese it makes things even worse, dreams even more vivid and nightmares even more scary. Avoid it late at night.
