Well Pits are strong... but vicious... no. Pits are not vicious.. nor are shar-peis. It all depends on the dogs socialization and whether it has been abused or neglected in the past.

According to the Encyclopedia of Dogs the Shar Pei is listed as a fighting breed along with the Pit Bull. And they were (are) used in pit fights in China. The extremely loose skin makes it difficult for the opponent to get a bite hold on them.

Yes they are a strong dominant breed but as to vicious, that is up to you as the owner and trainer.

A friend of mine had a shar-pei that he couldn't control. He got sucked into sending the dog to a so-called trainer, not knowing that this is something you NEVER do - nobody who wants you to send your dog to them is worth anything. Anyway, his dog's temperament got so unpredictable, he had to be put down.

By the way, pits aren't usually vicious - if they are, it's mostly the type of people who are attracted to pits or just plain poor breeding. Pits can be really friendly dogs.

Although the Shar-pei is a Chinese fighting dog, it will only get as mean as you let it. If you treat it with compassion and love, it shouldn't ever turn mean against you. Dogs will always try to protect their owners, so it would be good for you to socialize the dog as much as possible.

Dogs are vicious either from neglect, training, or abuse. Some are more protective than others, but vicious by nature against everything, well, that takes humans to make them that way.
