That is an impossible question to answer, for anyone who has tasted more than one passable whiskey (yes, you are right, this IS a jibe directed at all those folks who answered "Jack Daniels").
It is difficult enough to come up with a 'favorite' and now we are supposed to claim a 'best whiskey'? Hah! There is no best!
There are a hundred awesome scotches and a dozen awesome irish whiskeys and a few dozen awesome bourbons.
My historical favorite has been The Glenlivet {French Oak Finish}, a special 14 year old blend finished in french Limosin oak casks.
I haven't been able to get that lately, so tonight I'm drinking Glenmorganie (a perfect mate to the McClelland's 5110 in my Mark Tinskey Donkeynut).
But the best? Only God knows.

I lean towards the Bourbon Whiskeys; my favorites are maker's Mark, Knob Hill and Woodford Reserve. While I love these bourbons, the old standby whiskey, Jack Daniels, always has a place in my heart, and my bar!

I used to drink whiskey a few years ago and confirm that my taste buds preferred Irish (hence my spelling of whiskey). Jamesons is a wonderful whiskey and is smoother than Scotch.

Glenlivett or Glenfidich (not certain of the spelling) are excellent Scotch Whiskys - but if you go to Scotland there are hundreds of fantastic whiskys we never even get to hear about. I guess the same can be said for Ireland and some states in the USA as well.
