competing ideologies between russia and the us
the russians got so hammered in ww2, that they were extremely sensitive about their military and their defense to prevent it from ever happening again.
the us capitalistic imperialists wanted to prevent the spread of communism, which was against their financial interests.

Mutual suspicion. Neither side wanted trouble, but each side was convinced that the other side did. It got to the point that each side had more than enough missiles and hydrogen bombs to kill everybody on earth, and they kept building more until the Russians gave up because they ran out of money. Last I heard both sides were destroying missiles. That's not easy because they're very sturdy. They dip them in liquid nitrogen to make them very cold and brittle and then they drop them and they shatter like glass.

I believe it was the radical different between our ideas and the russians. As Americans we feared the spread of communism. Which was not helped by the administration we had back when the cold war started. It was honestly fear on both sides to stop the spread of boths sides ideas.

Some people wanted it to be hot and some people wanted it to be cold. It used to be called the "hot/cold war", but later it was just shortened to "cold war".

In a word, Fear. America believed that if Communism was not contained than country by country democracy would tumble (domino theory). And that this would threaten the American way of life.
