Back in the day, no one had a unit in their home that would actually cool anything because the technology wasn't there yet, what they did was go to the store (or have it delivered, I'm not completely sure) and get a block of ice. They would then place this in the "Ice Box". This box was designed to hold the ice and keep your perishables from perishing too rapidly.

Definitely a refrigerator and not a freezer. My parents always called the refrigerator the icebox and occasionally I still do! I recently heard the famous chef Emeril Lagassi refer to the fridge as the icebox too!

The refrigerator replaced the "ice box". Many many moons ago, people would buty a very large hunk of ice (Ice man used to drive around neighborhoods selling very large cubes of ice) and you would place that ice at the bottom of teh cabinet and kept perishables there. People would replace their about once a week.

Neither. It was an insulated wooden box that a block of ice was stored in. The evaporation of the ice kept food cool. There were no household freezers then. The ice was delivered to your door by wagon and was covered with sawdust to stay relatively frozen.

An ice box was an enclosure that you put a block of ice in and it held food from spoiling for around 3 days. When the ice melted it was necessary to replace the ice so that the food would not spoil. Read below.

In the days before referigeration people use large blocks of ice in a "box" with a place for the ice block to go and your food to go. Kind of like a cooler we use today. Look in old TV shows and movies you'll see one or ask grandparents.
