Should I take I-5 south to Los Angeles and then I-10 to Florida or should I take the map-quest suggested route through the midwest? I would like the trip to be the shortest possible.

LA is not that bad, I have driven through it numerous times.

However ... I would recommend the mapquest route through the midwest, I think it would generally be less congested, easier driving, and overall better scenery.

When I travel in my motorhome, 1st thing I do is look at http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx to get an idea of fuel prices around. You can click on a spot on the map & it'll tell you what avg price int hat county is. then go to http://www.gasbuddy.com/ & get specific stations that are cheapest. Prices might affect me more than they do you, my MH gets 12 mpg, (which is better than when the ex drove it & got 7 mpg!) But... it's still not what you'd get in your car. Normally I'd say GET OUT of California!!! But, right now our prices aren't really any worse than our neighboring states.
So, next is the weather you'll be encountering. I like warmer weather, so I stick to the south in the winter. I don't like it blistering hot, so for summer I stay to the higher interstates. I have heard that there are times that I40 has very unsafe weather, I haven't experienced that.

The Mapquest route is probably the shorter one. I'd say pick the one that takes you through places you've never been. It's a long trip, and you might as well make it as interesting as possible.

Dave has a good idea, whatever you do stay away from L.A.
