Treats are the best way with a little guidance up the stairs and a lot of "good boys" or "good girls". Let them know its okay. The treats should be small like training treats and can be used for other tricks too. Don't always give the dog one because then you'll have to get new treats. I did the same but trying to get my dog to close the backdoor now he'll close it when you point at it, it's so cool!

What breed is your dog and how old? If a young puppy, you really need to wait before teaching them to do stairs (especially down).

If an older dog, if you have another dog that would be perfect because your dog will learn from one who knows how. If not, hold onto your dog's collar to steady and calm him, then place one front foot, then the other up one step. You just keep repeating until he gets the idea of where to put his feet.

Its going to take some time for your dog to get over the inital fear/curiosity about the stairs. When we first got my puppy we would want her to come up the stairs but she was very hesitant and would only put her paws on the first couple of steps then would get scared and scamper back down. What we did was stand at the top of the stairs with a treat, a bone, or sometimes just ourselves, and we would call her name and say "come on, come on, good girl, come on" always being positive about it. At first she was scared, but after a little bit (very short amount of time) she was climbing all the stairs and going down the stairs easy. I would just suggest to be patient, it will take the dog a little getting used to but once they got it, your golden. Best Wishes

I took my dog up one at a time, Meaning I put her paws on the first step then her back paws. I did that all the way up the stairs the first time and she got it the first time. Now she is running upstairs all the time. It is kinda cute too cuz her ears flop as she runs. Good luck.

Do you mean to just walk up and down the stairs or on command?

To just walk up and down the stairs, put the dog on a leash. Then bring it up one stair and have it stop. Then go back down. Gradually get the dog to go up and down more stairs as it feels comfortable. (it will probably take a while, do not expect to get the dog to go up and down all the stairs in one day.)

To get your dog to go up and down on command, get a partner and a bag of treats. Split the treats and have your partner on one side of the stairs and you on the other. Take turns calling the dog up and down the stairs using whatever word choice you want to use. Everytime the dog goes up or down the stairs, give the dog a treat.

you sound as if your a woman so i'll proceed......for anything you do in life you must understand that you are a female and that means you can do or have done for you almost anything,,you have to decide how far you want to try,,,try this with your dog, let him see you in your underwear, going about twhat you do each day, get him interested and familiar with how you look and smell, he will follow you anywhere. if he has your ordor he will come to you. good luck on the training..

Stand at the top of the stairs and call him. He'll figure it out.
