I used to have asthma but I have not had any problems because of it for about 6 years. Should I still join Army JROTC?

Why not ask your doctor and the recruiters about your fitness for duty?

I was in AFJROTC and Civil Air Patrol in high school. I knew many people that had that condition and most of them got a lot out of the training. JROTC is simply a classroom environment and the instructors are aware of the fact that many people will have medical conditions that they have to look out for. Just remember to tell your teachers.

In the case that it is cured, I knew one person that was given a waiver for it and allowed to join the military.

As far as "should you join," I would ask yourself what do you want? Military service, the as a person with that condition, i would join JROTC, because you might be able to work a waiver out if your instructor goes in with you and tells the recruiting command that you have had no problems. If you are going to join to do something cool, then you need to remember that because it is easy to get sucked into the whole process and get in over in your head. Just remember to keep your head level and remember that ROTC is only a class and a training environment. The real military is not necessarily like that!

If you have any questions about ROTC, I would love to field any of your questions; email me at your leisure.

I think you'll be fine personally. Many people outgrow childhood asthma and you've been asthma free for 6 years. You'll have to get a physical so why don't you ask the doctor then?

Since asthma will be the least you have to worry about, go ahead and get a ride down to the recruiting station and sign up. Sometimes when people wait too long, they start to overthink the matter and end up putting it off indefinitely. Best to ink your signature now.

Get checked out first, maybe you've outgrown the asthma, if that's possible. Call a recruiter, they should be able to tell you if it is at all possible, that you could join with this pre-condition.

Sure why not? My nephew had asthma as a little boy and he had a great time in the Navy.

You would benefit more from JROTC than from not joining.
