The can opener was invented in order to help solve the problem of opening tin cans. Tin cans were invented in the early 1800s as a way to preserve food in a sealed container. These cans allowed the food to be transported easily. Although they were benefits to having the cans, it was very hard to open them. A hammer and chisel was the first method used. This idea did not work well. In time, claw-like devices and levered blades were used to open cans. The user would jab the blade in the top, and then would spin the can and apply cutting leverage with another blade. These devices were very dangerous.

After this scary invention, the first can opener with gears was invented in the 1930s. The user would squeeze two handles together and press a drive wheel against the rim. A rotating T-handle turned a toothed drive wheel, which forced the top of the lid into the cutting blade. This was invented more than 100 years after the invention of the tin can.
