I took German classes in college a few years ago, but I didn't take them as seriously as I should have. Occasionally, I encounter people in public who are speaking German, and I resist the impulse to talk to them in German, being that my German is poor. I got up to German 102 (that is, the second class)- but like I said, I just didn't apply myself. I can show you some of the basic German that I know. But essentially, I just want to say "hello" to people, when I hear them speaking German. However, I want to be able to properly explain that I only know a little tiny bit of German- that way, if they start speaking a lot of the language, I can explain how much of an idiot I am, and that I only speak a few words in their native tongue. LOL.

Okay, let me show you what I know:

"Guten Tag!" He he he. And stuff like "Na, Wie Geht's?"

How would I say, in German, "Sorry- I don't speak a lot of German- just a few words."

Also, if you can tutor me, that would be cool. Please let me know

"Es tut mir leid, aber ich spreche nicht viel Deutsch"... :) if you need any help with German I'd be happy to help you, my hubby was born and raised in Germany so if I don't know something I can ask him :)

I go with "Ich spreche nur ein Bisschen Deutsche."

You could also try "Ich habe ein Bisschen Deutsche gelernt und hatte gern mit Ihnen zu uben," Which is more or less "I've learned a bit of German and would like to practice with you." (I'm assuming you're not in a German-speaking place where you'd be thought rather freakish for that kind of statement!)

Most germans are able to speak english, so you can talk to them in your own language.
