Let me tell you the CORRECT answer because many people here DON'T HAVE A CLUE.
1 - YOU CAN ONLY GET MALWARE FROM LIMEWIRE IF YOU ARE F*CKING STUPID (I will clarify all of my points in just a bit...)
2 - USING LIMEWIRE IS NOT ILLEGAL.
3 - YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET CAUGHT ANYWAY.
Right, more detailed explanations:-
1 - The malware in the Gnutella network (NOT the LimeWire programs as idiots think) is painfully obvious - if you download 200KB file that says it is a full movie, for example, then you deserve all the malware you get. General rule is to avoid file sizes that are very small, and avoid 0.0KB, 750.6, 280.something, 70 odd KB or anything where there are a row of files all with the same suspicious size.
2 - LimeWire itself is not illegal - it is a P2P file sharing program - that has perfectly legal uses. It is the SHARING (not downloading) of copyrighted music that is illegal, so as long as you move everything out of your LimeWire folder to somewhere like My Music then you are fine.
3 - Even if you do download illegal material, it is impoosible to prove - it is ILLEGAL for someone (even the RIAA) to gain unathorised access to your computer through the net so there is no danger of being found out (because if they break the law first, then technically they are the wrong party - they could've altered your hard drive and framed you (at least that's what would be said in court) so they wouldn't dare. Besides, basic security software would stop this. The best thing to do is to try to have less than 1000 items in your LimeWire shared folder at any one time.
So to sum up, you WON't get viruses, you MAY NOT break the law, and you CERTAINLY WON'T GET CAUGHT!!!
LimeWire is a great program, I highly recommend it.

The truth is that if you've used LimeWire to download copyrighted material then you can now be sued because it's illegal, it's just that simple. The question really is: how *likely* are you to be caught and taken to court? The answer is not very, when it comes to P2P stuff like LimeWire the RIAA et al have traditionally levelled their guns at people who *upload* a lot, not people who download. The idea behind it is that if you can make people too scared to share stuff for other to download then the entire thing will collapse because there's nothing out there to grab. You'd basically have to be sharing a really huge amount of stuff to make you worth going after.
Note: while everything I've said has been true up to this point, they're still well within their rights to come after you if they decided to change their approach, you've broken the law and would have no defense. The only way to be truly 100% safe is not to illegally download copyrighted material.
Oh, and for God's sake don't listen to nina_p who appears to think that just because you haven't been arrested for something you can't have been breaking the law, which is an interesting viewpoint on legal issues but not one I'm convinced would stand up in any court.
And to anyone who does still want to use P2P for downloading stuff, running PeerGruardian probably isn't a bad idea:

Bamba has it 100% correct.
Of course it is illegal...why the devil do you think Napster had to eventually go as a pay site. The thing is, as fast as they can put a stop to how a site like Napster used to operate there is another site which takes over., presently its lime wire which seems to be number 1 amongst the other P2P programs out there. When it gets to the size which Napster used to be, it too will probably be the target to be stopped.
People have been taken to court in the USA..with huge publicity, in the hope of frightening people off..hasn't worked. You can see from the answers on here, many really do still believe its legal to download regardless of whether you have a bought copy or not.
Those people who do know it is illegal & continue with the program also know that the chances of getting prosecuted are so minimal it's not worth even thinking about.

I also have limewire and you can only get sued if you downoad a certain amount of files. Be careful on 'exe' files. They are very dangeorous. I have downloades many songs and have had limewire for many years now and i have not had a single problem. You cannot get sued because they are just doing it to get you scared. I know alot about limewire and if you need anymore help, please let me know.

About 1/2 of America can be sued about now for downloading music...Unless you are in the top 10 music downloading club and you have so much music you had to buy your own server..I don't think you need to worry, it costs them a lot of money to trace gather and prosecute, money they are only willing to spend on people selling mass quantities.

P2P isin't illegal as long as you keep within the comfort of your own home. It's only when you copy it and sell it, it becomes illegal.
I used to records songs off the radio with a cassette in the old days or video a TV show when I was going to miss it, was that illegal? If it was then I've been breaking the law for 20 years.

1. millions use it limewire and similar p2p services. they're not gonna come in your house, scan your harddrive and throw you in jail.
2. don't put files in a folder where they can be shared. if you don't know how to do this, right-click a file, select stop sharing fiel and you'll be fine

I have to agree with simon on this one. I have limewire and it has added viruses to my computer, so now I have to get my computer cleaned. They attach pop ups and viruses to every song that you download, so I do not recommend keeping limewire at all anyway. Goodluck
