I just adopted a kitten from the Humane Society. He got sick and I took him to the vet. They tested him for Herpes. Said it is not the same as humans but is in the same family. He had one eye that was running and did a lot of sneezing. They said it is a virus that causes him to be more prone to getting respiratory infections. I have never heard of a cat with it before. They told me that 99.9% of cats have it, just do not show symptoms like my kitten. Just wondering if I have the only cat diagnosed with Herpes. He is only contagious to other cats. He is not contagious to dogs or humans. They said they give it to other cats by sneezing or touching their noses to each other.

Hi Stephanie...feline herpes isn't uncommon and cats are prone to repeated respiratory infections. The most important thing to remember is to keep the stress levels low to help minimize problems with the immune system. I've included a few websites below that details about the virus and how people can help their cats live a healthy lives through diet and additional alternatives.

Shelters do try their best to keep their charges healthy and "yes" the herpes virus is unfortunately a common infection.

You can do the best thing by your kitten by seeing that his immune system stays strong. The best way to do this is feeding a raw meat diet. Easy to get kittens on it.

It takes a lot of reseach, reading, being on the internet etc. There is a Yahoo group called Holisticat where a great majority of the members raw feed their cats (I do). Feline Futures diet is another group that raw feeds. You could search for "feline BARF" (that's biologically appropriate raw food).

You can't just open a package of hamburger for them. One thing your kitten would LOVE would be a little meal of a raw, chopped up chicken wing, a small amount of chicken liver, some chicken heart and gizzard. All those are available in your supermarket (chicken should be hormone and anitbiotic free of course - no Tyson). This chicken wing "recipe" is a complete and balanced meal -- lean muscle meat, a small amount of fat, Vitamin A in the liver, taurine in hearts and gizzards.

For one cat it would be a snap. I do five around here, many people do up to ten. So it very possible and not all that difficult and you have a lot to learn before entering into it.

Your cat will definitely be happier and healthier if you take that approach to feeding.
