there have been many big names in science in the past .. who through years of trying to disprove the existence of god and of an after life , have begun to believe the opposite to be true through their findings
founder members of the SPR ( society for psychical research ) were all well known names in science and politics , who initially began investigating the paranormal in order to disprove it actually became more spiritual as a result of their findings

I can't answer that question for you- as it's your Uncle's decision. Ask him politely and respectfully to share his reasons for finding religion, and I'm sure he will be more than willing to.

I can speculate, however. I am an Atheist, and sometimes it is very comforting to believe in God. My Father is a born again Christian, and after a very damaging accident, he needed to find god to help him through each and every day. My guess would be that, as an Atheist and probably reaching an older age where the thought of death is soon, that it is very comforting to believe in god. To believe in an afterlife, to believe that there IS something after death. Maybe a miracle happened to him, that proves to him there is a god. I don't know, but I really do suggest talking with him.

Because the more scientists discover about the universe, the more complex they realize it is. They see that such a complex structure could not have possibly come about by chance. This is why the Intelligent Design arguments have come out recently. The Bible says something about this "Every house is constructed by someone, but He that constructed all things is God." There are countless 'structures' out there infinitely more complex than a house, yet if you came across a house in the middle of the desert, would you say it just 'showed up there'?

I guess it depends on what he was researching.....

Perhaps he came up against something that he could not explain, and the only logical conclusion left was the explanaiton of a God. But if thats the case, I cant imagine what he was working on that would lead to a logical conclusion of the existence of God. But if your uncle knows, he may wish to market it....he'd be friggin rich.

Many (though not all) people start to become more religious as they get older, because they realize their lives are coming to a close and are afraid. If your uncle is truly happy with what he believes, that's great, but if he "converted" because he was scared and wanted to be saved "just in case," he's not being true to himself.

It has to make sense contrary to what you think. All science that have been proven are facts of beginnings, origins and existence have been purely speculative because new findings continue to emerge oftentimes contadicting the first conclusion. With all the things discovered and invented there is always a point where everyman will ask himself. "Where did I really come from?"

I think it is because he never was an atheist but a kind of agnostic.

Or maybe because he got brainwashed by his own research - lol

it DOES make sense...the more research you do, the more obvious it is that the world was created on PURPOSE, and that there must be a God.
Also, when people get older (as your uncle did) they are more open to the spirit because they want something good to hold on to...and God IS good!

No, it certainly doesn't. Unless he's getting old and starting to fear death too much. Fear makes you do insane things. It's ok, though, this probably never happened anyway.
