Surly he should be helping those who cannot help themselves, or is this another contradiction that you'll try to explane and it'll still sound like a load of bol###s.

...I think the meaning behind "help themselves" is supposedly "ask the Lord for help". So... god helps those who "ask the Lord for help" and those who don't help themselves, or "ask the Lord for help" don't get any help because they didn't ask for it.

Personally I think asking a nonexistent myth for assistance is about as helpful as wearing lucky socks during a soccer game. You might psych yourself into thinking that some sort of supernatural mysterious power is guiding you towards your goal (pardon the pun) but in the end all that's happened is, as stated, you've psyched yourself out.

The "Lord" had nothing to do with it. It's psychosomatic, baby.

The quote "God helps those who help themselves" is not from the Bible. It's just something people say and attribute to the Bible. It's not really explained properly. If you are trying to solve a problem or overcome something, you must put forth effort to change the situation or make it better, and then ask God for help. You can't just sit back and expect him to fix everything. If there's really nothing you can do about a situation, you can still pray for help.

If God is everything outside of my direct or indirect control, then if I do the best I can and the most I can, I will be helped?

Total nonsense. The forces outside of my control either help or do not help. This is regardless of whether I help myself or not.

I would guess that if I ever did say that, it would be implying that those who help themselves are God. In other words God is within each person who helps himself/herself.

God help the police in trying to enforce the laws of the land if this is the way that society is going!

The common aphorism, which entreats followers of a particular faith, with the admonition that, “God helps those who help themselves”, does not imply that God willfully ignores the helpless. It merely asserts that God is not a genie in a bottle, who performs any wish you ask of him. He is not an instrument that easily resolves all ills and desires at ones whim. God requires that those who are capable of remedying their own situation do as much as they can to contribute to their own betterment. With the willingness to change demonstrated by the believer, God will behave as a facilitator or enabler to help the faithful believer actualize his desires, assuming they are wholesome, or redress a wrong.

because even God doesn't like people who sit and moan about how unfair their life is without trying to better the situation. Did you ever hear the joke about the guy who put his faith in God alone when his town was flooded? He wasstanding on his porch, surrounded by water and someone came in a boat and offered to take him to higher ground but he said No. God will provide. He was standing at the window of the second floor with water lapping at his feet and a canoe came buy and the people tried to get him to climb aboard, and he just said, No, God will save me. He was sitting on the peak of his roof when the coast guard came and tried to get him to step into their boat, but he again said No, God will save me. When he arrived in heaven after drowning in the flood he asked, God, I believed, why didn't You save me? God responded, I sent you three boats!
The moral of the story is Don't wait for god to save you, Get on the boat!

We live in a material world. Opportunity doesn't come flying in the window. If you ask for love and friendship, and sit in the house
and watch TV night and day. Don't expect God to help. You got to get out there, and be around others. Make yourself visible.

There is nothing Biblical about the saying that God will "help those who help themselves". And, your follow-up question is childish, to say the least.

The fact is, God helps those who love Him. Making such comments or asking such questions indicated you do not have a relationship with God. It is one thing to "believe" there is a God, and quite another to "know" God.

Because all of us should turn to our own strengths and virtues to solve problems rather than thinking we are unable. God knows if your making an effort or just trying to mooch a freebie.

- There are no contradictions in the Bible.
- Life is life, all we can do is help ourselves to the truth of the Word of God.
- If by some miracle you decide to read the Bible for yourself, you will have more of an understanding and many of your question will be answered.

A very humanistic philosophy, not taught in the Bible, probably started by stand up comics.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding".
