you need to talk to his parents. they may be the only ones who can legally get him the help he needs - ie, institutionalizing him. he needs to get help before he gravely harms himself. be strong and do whatever it takes to get him help.

Because someone cuts, does not mean they are going to kill themselves or even want to. You can't force him to get help. People cut because that is thier way of dealing with whatever they are dealing with, whether it be pain, a loss, stress, grief, hate, etc. It is a coping mechanism for them. What you can do is offer to listen to him without being judgemental or offering advice. People who don't cut or don't overeat or don't drink etc etc....because they have issues are usually the ones that have a support system of people who will just sit and listen.

Let him know others do this and get through it. Sometimes is may be with a counselor, others just on their own. He will seek help when he is ready.

You need to do the right thing, no matter how "wrong" it feels and tell someone. It may make you feel disloyal and untrustworthy, but you could be saving him from years of misery...or yes - even suicide.

If you guys are both in high school, contact the school counseling staff, or maybe even buck up the courage and talk to his mother or father.
Worst case, try to convince him to get some help - what he is doing is a physical expression of depression and he needs help now. Either he gets it himself or you help get it for him, but either way he needs it soon.

Well, I used to/still cut as well. Sadly, you can't do much for him but let him breathe or try to talk to him. Don't tell him to discontinue, but rather ask him why he does it in the first place. When the problem is found, the solution may be hard to find, but at least you'll have somewhere to start, right?
And this whole 'emo' crap is disgusting. That's simply a stupid marketing stand point used to slap yet another pointless label on people who act/dress a certain way. I hate labels.

Nothing you can do except encourage him to get professional help and if he's not willing to do that on his own you let people know that can force him to get help.
