Suggest you go to www.familysearch.org. This is owned and maintained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints renowned for their genealogy resources.

On the website you will find research helps and advice. Can download Personal Ancestral File free that is a software programme that you can use to record your research. There are also various forms that you can also download and print off.

You can also search several databases.

All this completely free.

If you need to you can e.mail them and get answers to Questions that you may have in relation to research, products etc.

All their Family History Centres, located in their Chapels around the world, are also free to use for non-members and members alike. They are staffed by volunteer members who are knowledgeable and helpful and you can also order films and fiche from their largest collection of resource materials in the world to view at the Centre for which there is a nominal charge. There is a catalogue on the website that contains an index of these records.

Good Luck with your research - it is fun and very rewarding.

I am doing my tree at the moment and i have found that rootsweb.com is the best one, it's the sister company of ancestry.co.uk although you do not pay any fee at all. ancestry.co.uk is good but to view the documents other than the 1881 census you have to pay to view, even with the 14 day trial they are doing at the moment. Really you need a good mix of sites. If you know the location of your furthest back ancestor then check out the churches in the area and then the parish records should give you more information. I have been at it for two weeks and am now back to 1553.

Good Luck

There are no sites out there which can trace your family tree. You have to do the work, sites can help with locating certain relatives, so long as you have the information on the people you are trying to locate, like date of birth, full name, date of death, place of birth, birth parents etc.

http://www.familysearch.org is run by the Mormon Chruch, but anyone can use it and it's totally free, and there are no obligations. Many Mormon congregations also have family history centers where anyone can go and use the information, computers etc. The one by my house even has accounts with ancestry.com which are free to the public to use. Good luck.
