I hate that expression too. It scared the crap outta me as a kid in case I died every bed time! Same goes for the prayer "If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take!" Sod that!! I was only little and didn't want anyone taking my soul!!!!!!

According to the Bible if you die a Christian you fell asleep. Read I Cor.15:51,I Th.4:14. The body sleeps but the soul lives on.

how old is the headstone? Perhaps in the year they died the generation that lived during that time called "deceased" or "passed away" as "fell asleep". I know in the 1950's they used to tell the kids that the person just went to sleep.

I'm sure they fell asleep sometime. You know, before they died. Everybody's gotta sleep. Seriously, though, the first stage of grieving is denial. They're still in denial that the person is actually dead, since it's usually less than a week between the death and the funeral.

I don't feel they feel asleep or died. I prefer to think the simply crossed over to another plane of existence. So to answer your question...I have no idea why people would put "fell asleep" on a marker.

There is way more than we can see. People may cease to exist in this 'physical' plane but they are still existing in the spiritual realm. To us, they are dead and are no more, to God, they are just as they were before. We cannot fully understand these things as we live in time and space and in the spirit realm the concept of time and space isn't like ours; but getting back to the original question, bodily or physically they are only sleeping until the Judgement Day and on that day EVERYONE, (not a single soul will espace it) will stand before God and their bodies will be recreated to stand before God for their reward or punishment. Obviously, heaven and hell.
Until then, they are sleeping...

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ you´ll never die. You´ll live in the spirit until resurrection day. Absent from the body present with the Lord. If you die in sin, as an unbeliever or infidel then is different, as you say..,´´they never fell asleep, they died!!

My sister put that on my Nieces headstone. She was only 22 days old. My niece did fall asleep in my Mum's arms and she never woke up.
