Bishop Fulton Sheen answered this best: "There are probably not 100 people living in the US who hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they think they know about the Church", or words to that effect.
If you are fed a diet of hate and dis-information from the pulpit, you will believe that it's alright to do so in public discussions, too.

I don't hate catholics my best friend is one. But I have studied religious history and in the past the catholic church wasn't always so nice. You know lutherism got started because a bunch of catholics decided that you shouldn't have to buy a coin to be forgiven of your sins. This was when the catholic church pretty much ruled England. Some people however just have a problem with everyone and everything in life. No religion is perfect. But for the most part we all believe in one being. God!

Good Question!
I used to be one of those people, but now I am Catholic as well.
I think Catholics being the largest Christian Faith are the largest target for non-Christians.
Some people think following God is going to make them un-happy, and discounting the faith makes it that much easier to continue on their ways and justify not following God. (That was Me)
People really should understand the truth about the faith before bashing it! RCIA classes are starting at Catholic Churches everywhere, seek and you shall find!
Peace!

Beats me. They are by far the least obnoxous of the Christian cults. Right-wing protestant fundamentalists are a much greater threat to the constitution and to society than are the Catholics. Oh, sure, the Catholics have few black marks... the Inquisition, the Crusades, pedophilic priests... but what the heck... the Holy Ghost was a pedophile. And who are protestants to look down on Catholics... after all, who brought us the Salem witch trials? And today, Christian 'Dominionists' (Reconstructionalists, Theonomists) have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.
Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”
They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.
Its most common form, Dominionism, represents one of the most extreme forms of Fundamentalist Christianity thought. Its followers, called Dominionists, are attempting to convert the laws of United States so that they match those of the Hebrew Scriptures. They intend to achieve this by using the freedom of religion in the US to train a generation of children via home-schooling and in private Christian religious schools. Later, their graduates will be charged with the responsibility of creating a new Bible-based political, religious and social order. One of the first tasks of this order will be to eliminate religious choice and freedom. Their eventual goal is to achieve the "Kingdom of God" in which much of the world is converted to Christianity. They feel that the power of God's word will bring about this conversion. No armed force or insurrection will be needed; in fact, they believe that there will be little opposition to their plan. People will willingly accept it. All that needs to be done is to properly explain it to them.
All religious organizations, congregations etc. other than strictly Fundamentalist Christianity would be suppressed. Nonconforming Evangelical, main line and liberal Christian religious institutions would no longer be allowed to hold services, organize, proselytize, etc. Society would revert to the laws and punishments of the Hebrew Scriptures. Any person who advocated or practiced other religious beliefs outside of their home would be tried for idolatry and executed. Blasphemy, adultery and homosexual behavior would be criminalized; those found guilty would also be executed. There are two conservative Christian pastors in Texas who have advocated the execution of all Wiccans. Ralph Reed, the executive director of the conservative public policy group the Christian Coalition has criticized Reconstructionism as "an authoritarian ideology that threatens the most basic civil liberties of a free and democratic society."
By failing to openly confront this insidious agenda, we have sown the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious wing-nuts are paving the way to Armageddon with gleeful anticipation.

I don't hate the Catholic church, but they did persecute my Anabaptist ancestors a couple centuries ago in Europe. Maybe if they asked for pardon as a church for certain misdeeds there would be better feelings toward them.
Edit - I never heard about Pope John Paul's request. Did he mention certain things specifically, or was it a blanket request?
Why is someone so ignorant as to mark my answer down. Are you so small minded as to try to belittle the torment my people suffered? Like I'm going to believe the apology now.

My opinion; people don´t hate you for being catholic, more accurately we pity you for letting the Roman hierarchy deceive you into believing in their system of pagan religion mixed with what may be considered by some, a form of Christianity. The church at large may be or not Christians, but those at the top level are wolves in sheep clothing; No offense intended. God bless you!!!

Pastor Billy say: Protestantism would not exist devoid of attacking Catholicism or what's made up as Catholicism. in basic terms study countless of the early Protestant confessions and also you'll hit upon in basic terms propaganda alongside with.. the pope is the Antichrist or the Roman Catholic Church is Babylon. John Henry Newman wrote. " to be a pupil of historic previous, one ceases to be a Protestant" Newman turned right into a convert to Catholicism from the Church of britain at a time even as it changed into fairly unpopular. He changed into engaged on tracing the routes of his church lower back to the Apostles getting to recognize no different actual way yet Catholicism being the religion of all first Christians in cohesion with the first bishops and apostles and clearly Christ. part above is arguing certain doctrine and preparation as not being biblical 2 issues i ought to favor to point, a million. in view that even as changed into the Christian bible made a catechism? 2. the position does the presupposition of all doctrine and preparation being from the bible first come into existence? What this man or woman and different Protestants do not comprehend is they in reality are infrequently arguing adversarial to what's in the bible and what's not yet are arguing biblical interpretive custom with Catholics as maximum human beings of Catholic perception is supported by using the bible, such as purgatory (the completed NT), forgiveness of sins (John 20:20-22) by using the Church, and so on and so on...

Do you mean the people who were almost wiped out by genocidal measures by the Catholic Church (including the Inquisition, treatment of natives, Crusades, etc...), or just those who disagree philosophically?
