Pigeons are born "altrical": blind, helpless, unable to regulate their own body temperature or gather their own food, without sufficient immune systems. They live in the nest feeding off of the sloughed cells of their parents' crop (think of a holding chamber for food above your regular stomach) until they're ready to live as adult pigeons do.

Not all birds are born altrical. Ducks, for instance, aren't. They're "precocial". Long story short, precocial birds have feathers, aren't blind, and don't need to be sat on just to stay warm enough to live.

Birds are classified as either precocial, semi-precocial, semi-altrical or altrical.

I grew up around pigeons my dad is a professional pigeon racer and his birds babies are so cute if you've never seen one sucks for you because they are a sight of a lifetime they do tend to get kinda gross at times but are still adorable like ALL animals.

Because pigeons hide their babies in holes and other dark places, you only see them when they are fully feathered out learning how to fly. If you go up under bridges at night you can get baby pigeons out of their nests and hand feed them.Once weened they will never leave your back yard.
