Over the course of our relationship it's slowly come out that beginning at age 4 he had an off and on Oedipus complex with his mother until he was about 23. He was sexually molested by a grandfather at age 5. He admitted having had illicit thoughts of female cousins and aunts, beginning as a teenager up until his early twenties.

What does it mean for his long term mental health if he had an Oedipus complex until just a few years ago?

What should I approach our relationship knowing this?

If you truly care about him, encourage him to seek out professional counseling that will enable him to work out these feelings and resolve the anger, hurt and betrayal that the molestation instilled in him. Having an "oedipal complex" is normal, but most boys grow out of it before age 8. The assault by his grandfather may have something to do with his attachment of sexual feelings toward his female family members; ie. they are the opposite sex, but they are "family" and therefore more safely desireable.

Please get him to counseling to resolve these issues.

Not knowing the entire story and not being a Dr. I can only give my opion but since he is open to talking .Try to get him to see a professional . I myself would let him know that the relationship depends on his answer.

It was so brave of ur bf to tell u all these, that openess has to tell you something. he trusts you that much to give out those sensitive information. what u need to do is to find out if he still have those thoughts, and if he does he might need to see a therapist about those. Hope this answer will help u a bit.

Just thoughts, or did he act on them? Did he have sexual contact with his mother? If so, walk away and don't look back. But if it was just thoughts I think you can have a good relationship with him.

Get him help, professional help; also, stay by his side through all of this so that he knows how much you care for him.
