They wouldn't just be rocks. They'd be gold-plated rocks with diamonds on them. Or, just a big old diamond or another precious stone. It could be a fashion accessory the way crosses are now. I don't think most Christians consider that what they're wearing is a means of capital punishment. If they'd had the electric chair back then, well.....

Genesis 9:5-6 sanctions the taking of a existence as punishment for homicide. They tried to stone Jesus, but he just snuck through the mob out of sight. It wasn't the way he was supposed to die. If he'd been stoned, it wouldn't have fulfilled scripture.

They'd propbably wear rocks around their necks, and the more "devout" you were, or the higher your status was in the church, you'd wear more rocks. Thus being weighed down my your duty to god, or some such.

Jesus was crucified because it was God's plan. There is no "if" involved in God's plan. We cannot change the course of events in God's plan. In John 18:11 "Jesus answered,'The only power you have over me is the power given to you by God.'" He gave up His life because it was God' will.
