There are a broad range of physicians who specialize in many different areas. Some are there to diagnose, others are infectious disease specialists, some pathologists, radiologists, osteopathic physicians, the list goes on.

Sometimes they need to run more tests, to make sure that when you leave the hospital, there's a very small chance that you'll need to come back soon. In other cases, you stay there because of rest. Others, for intake of nutrients that you may need to get back on your feet. Hospitals aren't just for surgeries, but also to make sure that you will feel as good as, if not better than, how you were before you needed to be in the hospital.

when patients come to the hospital, sometimes they just come in with pain, and they don't know yet if and when they need surgery. General practitioners examine them and do necessary laboratory work-ups and if they suspect that he/she needs surgical intervention, they are referred to surgeons. Now, when they indeed need surgery, surgeons need medical or cardiac clearance , to know if the patient is not a surgical risk. you have to research more to find out the job description of each doctors and their specialties. also.....please use spell check when asking questions, it just hurt our eyes looking at those wrong spellings

Doctors do many many things, not just operations. They oversee many patients and their care while they are there. It depends on what the patient is diagnosed with as to what they do with them. Some people have to have antibiotics intravenously and a doctor must be the one to write the orders to have it done. There are many other things.

surgeons used to be grouped in the same guild as barbers, and were not considered to belong to the same fold as "doctors".
Everybody has their place and purpouse.
Those of us who do not partake in surgery are busy with other things , like treating medical inpatients-not all diseases are surgical in nature...

Diagnose, treat. Not every condition is solved by surgery.
Some set broken bones without operations, etc.
