Well, for one thing ... the UK, together with Ireland and Sweden, are the ONLY 3 countries in the EU who have promised to take in people from the new members in Eastern Europe from Day 1 ... all other countries have put a moratorium of at least 2 years for immigration from these countries ...

One essential difference is that the UK, being an island, traditionally operates an immigration control at the border, whereas other European countries principally have an "internal control" as land borders are traditionally porous. Once past the immigration officer in the UK, there is very little which then effectively enforces immigration policy and laws, and illegal residence is relatively easy. On the Continent, there is the obligatory registration of citizens and of foreigners, of persons' addresses, ID cards and personal numbers are issued, police officers can run checks at workplaces as an everyday part of their duties, and the whole of governmental administration works in a unified way to support the immigration policies of the day. There has not been the political will to bring these sort of in-depth controls to the UK.

Continental European countries do not give financial benefits as readily or as generoasly as UK does.Continental Europeans are capable of deporting illegals and for illegals it is just easier to move on if you can be arrested and detained for not having an identity card.
