When I select backup on dvd shrink it tries to encode the dvd but it keeps stopping giving a cyclic redundancy error. the disc looks to be clean and it plays ok but it just gets so far during encoding then gives this error. Can anyone say what is wrong or can you recommend another program to use instead? Thanks :)

Go here and purchase AnyDVD.

Worth getting CloneCD also if you want to backup CDs 1:1.
However, this will also backup unprotected DVDs also 1:1.
(and they are unprotected once made a master with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15). :)

What AnyDVD does is confuse Windows into thinking that all DVDs are unprotected and have no Region.

Now run DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 and you can rip and recode with Region 2, Region 0, Region 1 and 2 only etc. It helps DVD Shrink 'backup' a lot of protected DVDs.

Also if the DVD is a small 4GB one, turn the compression off and you won't wait hours encoding it and will be a 1:1 copy.

For Region 1 DVDs this is great as AnyDVD fools your DVD into playing it without modifying the firmware or changing the settings (once done five times officially, is stuck forever at that region).
So I can watch Quantum Leap and Smallville :)

To the guy below...
Nero 7 is great, but doesn't 'backup' protected discs for obvious reasons. Nero is great for backups and making audio cds. :) Plus can make boot cds. I've slipstreamed a SP2 XP CD with it.

The DVD you are trying to backup may be dirty, physically damaged (scratches) or badly authored. These are the most common reason that you get this error code - the DVD can't be read by your DVD reader/burner.

There is also another more and more common reason for this error code - the DVD you are trying to backup is protected by the ARccOS copy protection system. To overcome this protection you need to use another tool - as DVD Shrink can't handle this protection on it's own. Macrovision Europe's DVD Decrypter is a program you can use before the files can be handled by DVD Shrink.

Use DVD Decrypter to transfer the DVD to your hard disk. Use 'File mode' when you ripp the DVD. Make sure you use the final version 3.5.4.0. If you don't know how to use this program - you can find a graphic tutorial here (http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php ).

After that you have used DVD Decrypter to move the DVDs contents to your hard disk - you should be able to use DVD Shrink with those files.

You can download DVD Decryper version 3.5.4.0 here (http://www.riphelp.com/downloads/dvddec.html ).

Some new Sony (and also from other companies) released DVD's have a modified version of ARccOS™ on them and are not fully supported by DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0.

There is a new freeware tool that will help you rip these ARccOS protected DVD's and also clean out all the garbage that the protection places in the files. You can read more in the How to backup your problematic DVDs with DVD Decrypter (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56831 ).

This tool is very easy to use and it works like a shell to DVD Decrypter.

If you are copying from a copied dvd there is an error on the copy go to aferdawn.com and down load FIXVTS with this you just drag and drop the vobs into the prog and it will repair the whole dvd for you if you look through the soft ware downloads you will find any dvd also plus if you have not got a newer version of dvd shrink which is 3.2.17 and a lot more

DVD Decrypter http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

This will ripped the full DVD then you have to run it through DVD Shrink

Same with DVD Fab

If you download from a torrent site like torrentspy.com, I HIGHLY recommend you get CloneDVD when all else fail this program usually works, but it's not free unless you use a torrent site.

I also use AnyDVD this runs in the background and rmoves encoding. Also not free. torrentspy.com

Hello,
To download the latest version of Nero for free you can click here http://bitly.com/VMdXmI

In the past, Nero was just software for burning CDs and DVDs, but over time, Nero has evolved into a complete multimedia suite that's both stable and high quality, suitable for both an amateur and semi-professional user.
Give it a try.
Cheers.
