You need to read it and if it says it should be used on dry hair before flat ironing, then hold it 10 inches away from your head and lightly mist it. The sound is probably from too much product on your hair and also you probably see steam from the moisture in the product. Alterna makes an awesome flat iron spray called straightening starch and it smells yummy. I love that one the best.

You should use the spray before you dry your hair. You could also try a leave in conditioner that you apply before you dry your hair. It is best to have some sort of product on your hair so that when you do use the flat iron it won't burn your hair.

That noise you hear is actually steam popping, and it can damage your hair.
I suggest you try a great product by Redkin called Spray Starch. Its excellent for straitening, and even if you use it in the morning, and want to touch your hair up in the evening; you don't need to apply more. The heat from the curling iron reactivates it.

Thermal spray should be used before blow drying. It then gets absorbed in to your hair and protects it from the heat. If it makes a noise(sizzles) it's actually ok, it's just steam, not smoke, and it's not burning your hair.

you don't necessarily HAVE to use thermal protectors before blow drying. If you apply it just before the flat iron, simply combing it through with a comb will usually stop the snap, crackle and pop.
