Only two percent of the United States is Jewish, yet they are disproportionately represented in the entertainment industry. Why? I know why there a lot of jewish professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.) - it's because the religion emphasizes studying and learning. But why entertainment? Is it because they like to peform and express themselves? Is it because they are inherently more talented than others? Is it because most Jews live in LA and NYC, the two centers of entertainment in the US?

I am jewish! I am asking this as a serious question!

Some of you just don't get it.
1. I am jewish and proud of it
2. I am asking a question about probablity, not about religion - if 2% of the US is jewish, but 10% of the entertainment industry is jewish, the probability of that happening at random is less than 1%.
3. At least the guy who said favoritism is giving a logical explanation - he may be write or wrong, but it explains the statistical anomaly.

Yes, it is because Jews like to perform and express themselves. We have always been drawn to the joys of singing, dancing and entertaining. I don't think Jews are inherently more talented that others....just more into it, maybe.

Favoritism. A jewish person got into a place of power in the industry at some point (it could probably even be traced back if anyone cared to look) hired they're jewish friends and/or family, then they hired their jewish friend and/or family, etc. Having things in common with someone makes them like you a little better, and that makes it more likely that they're going to hire you. Simple favoritism, that's all.

Dear Mr. Mel Gibson...Oh umm sorry... to answer your question I would say it depends on what part of the industry you are examining. The entertainment industry is VAST with a host of different people with different backgrounds involved at different levels. I dont think most people care what nationality you are as long as you do your job well. Its my belief that at least that should be true in most industries not just entertainment.

I don't know. I can't speak for "so many jews". Maybe paranoia follows from memory of the holocaust. One of the things the Nazi's did with brutal effectiveness was transmit propaganda using film, radio and other forms of mass media against the Jews in the years leading up to WWII and the internments and exterminations that took place in concentration camps. Maybe memory of that horrific use of film, radio and other forms of mass media might be enough to cause "so many jews" to be highly motivated to converge upon careers and network with one another in the entertainment industry.

How do you help your rivalry that there are "many jews interior the entertainment marketplace"? Kanye West-no longer Jewish. Tom Cruise-no longer Jewish. Betty White-no longer Jewish. David Letterman-no longer Jewish. Cameron Diaz-no longer Jewish. Cher-no longer Jewish. Kelly Clarkson-no longer Jewish. Wanda Sykes-no longer Jewish.

because that is what most of what jews do-they are business people. they were and always will be like that so the industry -business or whatever it might be-is just some more of them expanding with knowledge and skill.

Why do you care? You're welcome to try the entertainment industry too! Don't be so concerned about who does what, worry about where you are going to go when you die.
