You usually have to be one of the first to die from it or be famous. It's an honor I could do without.

A disease is named after you when you "discover" it, which means when you describe a new disease with discrete symptoms, etiology, etc. For example, Wegener's granulomatosis (an autoimmune disease) is named after a physician named Wegener. There are alternatives, though - as in Lyme disease, which was named for the area in which the disease was first recognized as a disease separate from others, and which is where the disease-carrying ticks were endemic (Lyme, CT).

In my microbiology class, we learned about several diseases that were named after the first guy who died from a newly "discovered" disease... which is not such a good thing.

In about 95%of cases, it is named after the doctor who first described it in mainstream medical literature (journals). Rarely, it will be named after the first person described as having the disease.

Bottom line: go to med school, be observant and publish your findings.
