Love is...long-suffering, kind, love is not jealous, it does not brag, does not get puffed up, does not behave indecently, it does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked. It does not keep account of the injury. It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
Furthmore,
In the Greek Scriptures, there is four different uses of love...expressing ones feeling.
Agape love
Philo love
Eros love
Storge love
Agape is the greater because it is all reaching like the love our creator has shown to men and women.
Please look up the others in a good ref. Bible Dic.

Love is the only thing that's real.
It has no connection to sacrifice or commitment. Those are social constructs that define relationships.

It exists whether we recognize it, or not. It is never-ending and was always there.
That's why lovers have sense of belonging together. They can't see a beginning, or comprehend an ending.

Love is the essence of who we are.

A temporary insanity curable by marriage or by removal of the patient from the influences under which he incurred the disorder. This disease, like caries and many other ailments, is prevalent only among civilized races living under artificial conditions; barbarous nations breathing pure air and eating simple food enjoy immunity from its ravages. It is sometimes fatal, but more frequently to the physician than to the patient.

I think that the best explanation for love in our time, at least from a biblical standpoint is compassion for those around us. It is not an emotion but instead something we can choose to do. Otherwise we would not be commanded to do it.
