Do you only have one litter box? Because for 6 cats, you need more. We live in an apartment and don't have a ton of room, but I've managed to set up two boxes for my two cats.
As far as keeping the smell down, Tidy Cats Small Spaces is wonderful! It doesn't cut down ALL of it (especially right after they go), but it's the best I've tried so far. Also, boxes with hoods can keep the smell down (especially the hoods that have a slot for a carbon filter....wonderful devices). Just make sure that you keep it clean even if you're not smelling anything.
My husband wanted to try something for multiple cats since we just got our second, so we bought some of the Tidy Cats crystals and are working on mixing it with the Small Spaces.
I did not have a good experience with Arm & Hammer. It didn't clump like it was supposed to...ended up leaving the rest of the litter kind of "muddy", if you know what I'm saying.

If you have a Sam's Club nearby, get their scoopable litter (it's about $9 for 35 pounds. Also, with that many cats, use 2 boxes, with liners (Johnny cat work best). You may have to start with new boxes, or soak the old one in bleach after you set up the new one. While the #2 smells, it is really the urine that lingers. The liner will stop the urine from being absorbed into the plastic box.

This is a tough one.
I have experimented with different brands, clumping, non-climing, Fresh Step. Tidy-Cat etc. All work "fairly" well.
However, after years of trying different ones, I have finally decided to stay with and use Tidy Cat Super Scoop.
I have tried other scoopable litters, but Tidy cat's brand seems to stay clumped together better than the others, masks the odors better and you dont have little chunks breaking up here and there. It really does a good job of masking the odors as well. You still need to scoop out the clumped urine and "poop" daily, but other than that it remains freash smelling for a long time. After I scoop a few days I add a little more litter to keep the level up.
Try it, you may like it and your hubby may stop complaining as well :-)
P.S. I also bought one of those covered litter boxes(tall one from Wal-Mart - 14.99). It works well, but I had to remove the door because my cat would not go in...freaked her out I think. But without the door, she does just fine and it helps cover the odor even more.

Try getting litter that is designed for multi cats. Also get the litter that is the clumpable kind. This way when the cat pees it clumps up as well and you can scoop it out. It is usually the pee that smells because cat pees contains ammonia. With six cats you might want to scoop twice a day. Also you can get one of those litter boxes that automatically scoops the litter for your when the cat is done using it. Those are kind of pricey you can get a litter box that is hooded. That might help with the smell. Also you can put one of those automatic air fresheners by it that puff out air freshners at intervals. You might want to get two litter boxes. Put one at one end and one at the other. This way six cats are not using the same litter box all day.

I use Arm & Hammer multi-cat and it does a pretty good job. My sister uses Tidy Cats Small Spaces litter and that stuff works so well!!! She has the litter box in her utility room which is connected to the kitchen and when I was there I couldn't smell a thing, even standing next to the box. I asked her what litter she was using and once I'm out of my Arm & Hammer I'm switching!

I use the wood pellets called Beauticat, they are made from recycled wood and smell fresh, like pine. They expand so you use very little litter, which is economical, and unlike the clumping ones it does not set rock solid like concrete when they wee on it, is just absorbs the wee. I would say to get covered litter boxes as well, this has been a god send for us and our 2 cats, you cannot smell the litter then and most trays have a filter at the top of them to filter out the smell.

I have 3 cats! We use Fresh Step Scoopable Cat Litter. We've found its the best for multi cat households. Try scooping your box more often too...like in the mornings before you leave for work and then again in the evenings when you get home from work. Afterall, kitties like clean litter boxes.

Something with the little crystals and then we also use Arm & Hammer Pet Deodorizer for litter. They sell it at like Target for $1.99 and its located right next to the cat litter. We just sprinkle some of that whenever we clean the litterbox and it works. Smells good and eliminated the odor.
P.S. We have 2 kittens so thats alotta poop to clean daily! lol

We buy those expensive crystals, like $13 a bag around here, but they are SO worth it!! There is never a smell. Try them, plus you can sign up online with the litter's website and enter the code that comes with every bag and when you get enough points saved up, you get a gift for your kitty!!

Stinky litterboxes can sometimes be caused by what you are putting in the front end of the cat.
My cats have a raw meat diet, their poopies are very small (almost all the food is digested so there is very little waste) and it doesn't have any smell.
