To make a statement to reflect the fact of a macho chest thumping attitude (guys or girls).
In Ca. we had cases were the dog was raised well, without anger , aggressiveness and yet it went againts their owners and mauled their faces, arms, etc. What they say about : "It's not the dog, but how they are brought up by the owner," is not true. They are not a family pet. many european countries have outlaw them completely.

there really is no such breed as a "pit bull". but the type of dog that is known as a pit bull is usually a bull terrier or american staffordshire terrier mix. These dogs are known as "nanny dogs" because even when they were taught to fight each other, they were taught to never hurt the person that would reach into the pit. I know several extrememly sweet pit bulls. They are so incredibly nice and affectionate and some are even terrified of yorkies and run away!
The reason that so many people are afraid of pits is because they are the dog of choice for people who beat and abuse dogs. So most people hear about pits turning on their owners because those owners beat their dogs until the dogs turned violent.
Some countries, like Spain, have banned pit bulls, german shepherds, akitas, dobermans, and rottweilers. All are known as guard dogs, but that doesnt mean that they kill children and old people.
Banning pits is so very unfair. It is like saying that people of a certain race cant live in your town. so sad that people should hear such biased things about such a sweet breed of dog and think of completely banning it.

First of all not all pit bulls are mean. And the dog isn't born mean, the owner has alot to do with it to. There is no leash law were I live so alot of dogs are able to walk the streets without there owners, and out of all the dogs in the neighborhood the pit bulls are the most gentle. Think twice before you make a statement like that.

"Pit Bulls attack more people than any other breed." Bite statistics actually show otherwise. More popular breeds that are generally considered to be "nice dogs" top the majority of lists. It may seem to the general public who is constantly bombarded with disturbing reports on Pit Bull attacks that this is the only breed that harms humans with any great regularity. However, the fact remains that Pit Bulls are hot news items. Dogs of all breeds and mixes bite and attack people all the time, but it is mainly the Pit Bull bites that get sensationalized. A report about the local Golden Retriever that attacks and maims a child isn't considered newsworthy. No one wants to believe that any dogs--even the fuzzy, cute, popular ones--are capable of biting. It's much easier to blow up and sensationalize a story about a vicious dog when it's a member of a breed who's reputation preceeds it. Pit Bulls are already considered the demons. All the reporters have to do is stand in front of the camera, look horrified, and say, "A Pit Bull did it".
Pit Bulls and Rottweilers
They’re vicious killing machines, right? Uh huh – they might lick you to death.

There is an extravagant amount of bad information out there about Pits and Rotties. Did you know that the American Temperament Test Society rates their temperaments at above average and at about the same level as Golden Retrievers?? Here’s how they stack up along with some other popular breeds:

Average Rating of all Breeds in this study: 81.0%
Cardigan Welsh Corgi 76.8%
Shih Tzu 76.9%
Old English Sheepdog 77.8%
Beagle 78.2%
Cocker Spaniel 81.5%
Rottweiler 82.3%
Golden Retriever 83.2%
American Pit Bull Terrier 83.4%
Mixed Breed 85.1%

In the ATT test, a dog is put through a series of confrontational situations. Any sign of panic or aggression leads to failure of the test. The achievement of pit bulls and Rottweilers in this study disproves once and for all the old tired belief that they are inherently aggressive to people. (Thanks to Bad Rap Pit Rescue for this resource)

To be fair, these dogs aren’t for everyone - no one breed is universally appropriate for every person. Pits and Rotties, like every dog and dog owner, should go through at least basic obedience training together. Pits and Rotties require a lot of activity, a lot of love and attention, and an owner who understands dogs or is willing to learn. They are loving, loyal and gorgeous dogs. Don’t believe the hype!

It is all owner related!! It depends on how they are raised. We have a Pit Bull at the clinic where I work and he is solid white and deaf and he is the best dog ever. He has a better temperment than probably 75% of the Chihuahuas, Dachshunds and Schnauzers that we see in our clinic. He is very sweet and loving and has never offered to bite any of us, even when he's asleep and you wake him up, he just comes up wagging his tail. The breed ban is a bunch of crap, instead it should be an owner ban, certain people should not be allowed to have a pit bull, or any pet for that matter.

My view on pit bulls is that they are as mean as there owners make them out to be! Most people who get pit bulls get them to raise the to fight or to protect, but when you take a pitt bull and show love and compassion they will show You and Other people love and comppassion! But, just like ANY other dog, some are born a little crazy and they do attack people! You just here more about pitt's because people like to focus on them as a dangerous animal. Any dog can attack a child or an old person.

I raise Pitt bulls. And I think they are the smartest and most loyal dogs you can own. Why is everyone giving so much crap about Pitt bulls?? You don't here people talk about when a doberman or a Rottweiler kills or attacks someone!! If you raise your dog to fight and teach him to attack people when they come in your yard that what they do! Its the owners fault not the dog. My dogs are the most gentle with my nieces and nephews than any other breed I ever owned. My chow use to snap at anyone who would come in the house but I never had a problem with my Pitt bulls, ever. Don't judge the dog, judge the owners, a bad owner makes a bad pet!!!!!

OK this kinda makes me mad. you are stereotyping the whole breed by some cases of bites. my cousin has a pit that is a great dog and would do any thing that you told him to. i love that dog.
did you know that the #1 breed of bites is actually the cocker? the reason pits get the bad rap is because they where used for fighting and they have what is often called a lock jaw, meaning that if they do bite down hard enough on something there jaw will lock there, kinda like an alligator, there for the cases where they bite are more Savior. not all of them are bad and they can be just as good as any other dog if cared for right.

They are only POTENTIALLY dangerous. I bet that most of the pits involved in killing humans had been:

1. tied to a chain most of their lives
2. trained to fight
3. allowed to run wild in a pack of dogs

It isn't the pit bull, it is the usually the owner. Unfortunately, the people who often get them are involved with drugs/illegal activity and think a "mean" dog will make them look cool or something. (they also fight them) Pits, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds all have this stigma. All of these breeds CAN be headstrong and they need an intelligent, DOMINANT owner who is responsible enough to have them trained correctly and not put them in potentially lethal situations (would you let your little baby grab your pit bull's food dish while he was eating? He shouldn't bite...but there is always that POTENTIAL)

I will state that I will not own one right now (having 2 small children) because I recognize that they possess the potential to really hurt someone. Remember that their ancestors were used in 'bull-baiting' and fighting so they have been bred to do these things. I feel safer around a smaller dog whose ancestors have been bred to kill rodents...do you see what I'm saying? I don't feel comfortable letting my kids around something who can bring down large prey.

But, I still say, mostly it is stupidity/ignorance on the owner's part. They are not "bad" animals.

Pit bulls are not innately aggressive, but there are many irresponsible breeders out there who want to breed "fierce guard dogs". It is actually considered a fault in the breed, considering they were bred for DOG fighting.

Why would someone want any breed of dog? It's personal taste. I've met many sweet pit bulls, don't always go by what the media says.

Pit bulls have a bad reputation because of what people use them for...fighting. As long as you get a pit as a puppy and train it yourself you shouldn't have problems. All dogs can be dangerous. I had a black lab that was very aggressive and I had to put it to sleep because it started attacking men...and took a chunk out of my boyfriends waste. I was going to get a pit, but got a great dane instead. Even with their rep they are still scary.
