What you're thinking of is more along the lines of Death Metal (Death Metal is to Heavy Metal, as what Heavy Metal is to Rock).
Heavy Metal tends to be more "storytelling" than outright goremongering. It's sung by all people regardless of beliefs, like Satanist Rob Zombie, Wiccan Sully Erna, Atheist Glenn Danzig, Disillusioned Christian James Hetfield, and Christian Dave Mustaine.
All uses of death in Heavy Metal have a symbolic reason (held within the entire song), most speaking against it (ie One by Metallica), very few for it (and those that consistantly do are often borderline Death Metal), and some speak of it in a prophetical or Biblical sense (Symphony of Destruction by MegaDeth).
Some metal has a variety of topics... love... peace... friendship... motorcycles... sanctity of life... but a good many deal with everyday miseries, like the evils (or joys, depending on the subject of the song's viewpoint) of war, heartbreak, loss, death, sorrow, powermongering, and so on. It is Nihilism, embraced through music.
Just as gangsta rap speaks about the life of the ghetto, the sorrows and joys within... so too does metal do the same thing... but, instead of the viewpoint of a gangster, from the viewpoint of one with intense emotions, going through their trials in life.
Those that consistantly use pentagrams, devils, horns, etc (like Slayer, for starters), call out to 'faddish' Satanists... ie, those who think 666 is cool, rebel against Christianity because we're goody-two-shoes and/or the status quo, like rebellion, have no or little concept of what the \m\. -_- ./m/ finger sign means, and so on. Those people are easily influenced, and a quick buck is made off them.
I hope you find this insightful.
Edit: I too am a Christian, and I also enjoy Heavy Metal... some secular (I'm a Metallica and MegaDeth fan), some Christian (I'm also an Eternal Decision and Disciple fan, too).
Not all of it is Satanic. As mentioned, it is just pure... raw... emotion let completely loose.

""Why does heavy metal music have such satanic overtones?""
If the BEAT is not hypnotic then the Lyrics must be OBTUSE.
Many of the Creeps that preform are wearing AC/DC Flashes or some such...they want to look EVIL to make $$$$$$$$$.

Without heavy Metal, you christians would have nothing to point your fingers at. Maybe because that's what we like. Not all heavy metal sings about all that either. And no, not all of them are Atheists. Some are Satanists and some are Catholic and some are christian. Believe it or not, the lead singer of Slayer is Roman Catholic. He doesn't write the songs, but he says he doesn't necessarily mix his religion with his music.

Because we can't be all happy happy joy joy all the time. It's not satanic unless you make it that way. Most of it is not satanic but only speak of the darker side to life. Some, however, delight in the the "shock value" of the satanic stuff.

i am a christian and i love heavy metal. it isn't all like that. it does have a lot of dark undertones to it but not all of it is satanic. alot of secular music in general has ungodly and satanic influence because it encourages action that oppose GOD--whether sexually explicit, violent, or whatever. don't get me wrong even all "secular" music ain't bad, i've her GOD in some of it too. but alot of secular heavy metal has heavy satanic overtone because there is a spirit of destruction, even self-destruction of it that's why alot of them look "dead". you'd be surprised that most are not athiest, alot are though. but that is the same with any music.
most people get into this music because it deals with raw emotion. if people hurt so bad they want to die they look for music that helps them relate and sometimes get pulled into the darker side that pushes them closer to self destruction. on the secular side the emotions are exposed but there is no resolution or solution given to the pain so people seethe and hate and fall deeper into it. BUT...
heavy metal on GOD's side is different.it still evokes raw emotion that may not be comfortable for people to deal with, but it speaks of what can change it and WHO can change it. i have heard some that speaks only the Word of GOD. people screaming at the top of their lungs and with all their might about loving the Saviour and wanting to live worship of HIM for the rest of their lives and all eternity.i have heard metal that beckons to people that there is a better way and a way out of the pain and frustration.i have felt the presence of GOD in some HEAVY METAL music.
with that said it is an acquired taste. it is loud and unapologetic and sometimes harsh.but my bible tells me that EVERYTHING that was made was made by HIM, and without HIM nothing was made. so that means EVERYTHING in existence had a godly purpose originally and that all things must be returned to that purpose. EVEN STUFF WE DON'T PARTICULARLY CARE FOR. Just because we don't like something doesn't mean GOD doesn't like it. i am human and by default have limitations (even of what i will like), HE has none and can like what HE chooses.there is hardly anything more moving than an individual broken before GOD screaming about HIS love and their gratefulness for HIS sacrifice and wanting to kiss HIS feet at the gates of eternity for what HE has done.
this kind of music--heavy metal---speaks to a particular kind of individual and we would be wise not to blow that off but direct them to the kind that speaks life and not death. hope this helps...

I've never really understood that, myself. But yes, I would assume most of them are either atheists, and doing it for a laugh, or they're satanists, and are just plain crazy. (See the band 'Mayhem' for an example of this)
But FYI... I'm a metal head from way back. But that black/death metal stuff is just silly, imo.

I think it's because they feel it's the ultimate rebellion. And that's mostly what their music is about. Being, wild, crazy untameable and it's probably for the shock effect as well. I'll just stick to my R&B, no devils there lol

No
Atheist: One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
Where in that definition does it say anything about Satan? No where!
