You can also get small amounts of herbs from the store. Sage is *real* easy to get.

Two things that may help:

1. Windowsill gardening with small plants, in your room.
2. In the supermarket, you can usually find small packets of herbs and spices, and a wide selection of them. You can boldly go...to the baking and produce sections!

Don't worry too much about specifics. Loosen up. Really, it's the intent. I'd raid the spice rack. You can try a bay leaf or rosemary if you don't have any sage. Don't use thyme except for banishings cause, damn, that stuff stinks, it'll chase anything away! You can also scrape sap off of trees and burn them. I use sap from a cherry tree when I honor Aphrodite. Whatever you're going to burn, say "Let this smoke (insert what you want it to do here)." (example "purify this space" or "create a fragrance pleasing to the Gods" whatever) And be sure to open the windows if you're indoors. And warn your mother. I keep bursting in on my poor daughter thinking she's burning the house down. if she just warned me ahead of time!

PS fresh herbs don't burn well, you'll want to use something that's already dry!

There are all sorts of dried herbs you can get at the grocery store, even dollar stores will have them for cheap. Just buy some insence charcol at a candle shop or hemp store to burn them on. Some good ones are Sage, Rosemary, Thyme and Mint. And dont forget trees and shrubs! Just cut up into pea sized amounts any cedar, spruce or pine cones, needled, leaves and sticks.

i agree with jp. what you need comes from within. herbs, etc. only serve to strengthen the intent. i don't know what you're trying to do, but if you don't have sage or lilac then you can use a suitable herb as a subsitute. most new age/pagan stores carry good amounts of herbs that aren't all that expensive. you may want to try getting what you need from them.

ps-no offense to the other people, as they had good suggestions but if i were going to use herbs i would probably get them from a new age store.

Do you have any Rosemary? Most of the time you can burn that and it will have the same results as Sage. If you have it in your Kitchens Cabinet, (which is likely) lite up a Charcoal block, and pour some on it and lite it. Rosemary has the same properties as Sage, FYI.

Most stores sell sage smudge sticks. But be warned, they smell A LOT like pot. Anytime you burn herbs, it will be an ugly smell, not a pretty one.
You can burn incense--nag champa, frankincense, sandalwood--also easily purchased.
Or you can use essential/aromatherapy oils.

I have found rosemary to be good substitute in most cases. Mom may have a bit of that in the cupboard.

If you don't have the tools then don't worry about tools. Do ritual without the tools. The tools are just a crutch. You are the only thing you need for ritual.
