There are two forms of skin hypersensitivity that can give you this feeling. The first is contact dermatitis and the second is cutaneous anaphylaxis or hives. While both are itchy they are somewhat different in their causation.
Contact dermatitis is caused by contact with a sensitizing agent which could be a chemical like the hardner for expoxy resin, a metal like nickel but the most common sensitizer is the Urushiol Resin of Poison Ivy. This oily toxin sticks to the skin and starts an immune reaction. By 3 to 7 days later a blister will form and underneath it in the skin will be lots of lymphocytes and eosinophils. This rash will last about 11 days from the day of its first appearance. After your first bout with poison ivy your immunity to urishiol will cause subsequent outbreaks to be more rapid and more itchy.
Hives are usually triggered by eating a food for which you are genetically primed to be sensitive. People with sea food or peanut allergies can break out in hives within 30 minutes to a few hours after eating the sensitizing food. The hives are areas of fluid swelling in the skin produced by mast cells degranulating and releasing histamines and inflammatory mediators. The antibody IgE combining with the sensitizing antigen near a mast cell triggers this degranulation. Antihistamines and epinephrine can stop the progression of hives before too much swelling occurs. Antihistamines have virtually no effect on the delayed hypersensitivity of poison ivy and other contact dermatitis lesions.

Most likely, it is a allergic reaction brought on by direct physical contact, ingesting or inhaling something that has activated a histamine response.

Usually the itching can be related to nerves (hives are small welts) or if youve changed soaps or have rubbed up against something to irritate your skin.
