I've been told by people that though I am tall for my age, I tend to slouch a little bit instead of standing straight, and because of my height, it's more noticeable.

At any rate, I was wondering, what are somethings you can do to improve your posture?

I've been told, also, that sleeping on a hard, straight surface (i.e. the floor) also helps your back. Is this true?

Thanks for your help.

When I was younger, I was told that I too slouched. Didn't really pay much mind to it, until i saw a picture of myself from behind and it made me aware of it.

Just the awareness alone made me correct it. Every once in a while, I would find myself slouched as I sit in front of the computer, so I'd correct it by pushing my butt against the back of the chair and sit up tall (straight).

You can also find certain straps to help you keep the awareness in your slouching. It's basically a strap that pulls each shoulder tight across your back.

I found one here: (called a posture corrective brace, item# 30411 $39.95)

Sleeping on too hard a surface invites back troubles! I understand your reason to slouch
I have an Uncle 7'& 3" he has to slouch a bit
in most houses cause if he didn't his head would touch the ceiling. To keep his posture from going bad he does pushups and has a regular exercise routine. Sometimes Outdoors
he'll walk around with a book on his head! Some people see that and copy. The copy cats do that for fun but my Uncle does it to keep
his spine from curving cause of all the slouching
he did. His name is Lorrie and he and is friend Dave did built a Logcabin that I understand has a 12' high ceiling. Usually ceilings are only that high in Churches and Mansions! I'm sure glad I don't have my uncles problem I'm 5' 7" I'm told that Average is 5' 8-9"

No, I don't think sleeping on the floor will help. However, if you strengthen you abdominal muscles, that will help keep you back in proper alignment. Try crunches, yoga, or pilates.

Also, stand against a wall and make sure the back of your head, shoulders, hips and heels are touching the wall. Then you know how it feels to stand straight. Step away from the wall and keep the position.

If this is something you are truly concerned about, I'd recommend making an appointment with your chiropractor.

focus on squeezing your scapula or shoulder blades together. that helps to stretch your anterior chest that become tight when you are slouching. standing sideways and forward in front of a mirror and correcting helps to get the feel and look of how you should hold your posture. it's mind over matter because it's so easy to forget to hold you body up and slouch. if you sleep with too many pillows under your head you're also setting yourself up for bad posture.

while standing, tighten up your abs and gluts, notice how your body straightens up. continue breathing but try to think about tightening up those abs during the day.

I read a few weeks ago in the Daily Mail (British paper) that leaning your chair forward or backwards has been proven to improve your posture. I was featured with the age old teacher telling the pupil not to swing/lean on their chair quote, well now the pupil has been proven to be correct!

It's like anything else, you have to practice at it. I've been trying to improve my posture, and a lot of the time I have to remind myself to straighten up. It's something you have to constantly work on or else you lose it.

Yoga builds your core muscles which helps your muscles to hold your body in correct posture all on their own. Best wishes

Lift a small weight over your head many times and often. You will feel the difference almost at once.
