Yes...the only members of the TV simpsons family not named after a real person is Bart, which is an anagram of Brat. Bart is Matt Groening, the other members of the Simpsons are his family.

No, its based on caricatures of actual people that Matt Groening had come in contact with in his life.
I'm sure you've met some people who are truly "characters". Take what makes them amusing, and exaggerate it a little, and volia- you have a cartoon character.
So, its kinda based on reality, but not directly from a single family. Whoever said that is an idiot.
